is it really better to suffer the slings and arrows?

May 31, 2007

speaking of arrows… (sorry, worst segue ever!)

i hear the zazzlers had a mini-debate today over the use of arrows in the latest contributor newsletter. now, the inzider is a fan of all things 1997, but the ms paint aesthetic isn’t one of them. please don’t let me sway the vote… slip on the robe and judge for yourself.

Zazzle at the 30th Anniversary Star Wars Convention

May 30, 2007

A long, long time ago and home to the LA Galaxy, there was an occasion like few before… bigger than a Death Star, it was the 30th Anniversary Star Wars Convention, and it rocked the house harder than a light saber rave party after too much time on the moons of Dagobah. Here’s Rob (http://www.zazzle.com/habitforming) when he wasn’t actually snapping a photo:

rob at star wars convention

It had EVERYTHING, people weren’t just dressed up as Boba Fett or Darth Vader, they were dressed as every kind of space creature that even had a single cell of screen action in the final cut (some that didn’t too). Walking into that convention center was more like walking into a spaceport, except being dressed like a human was more alien than normal. Zazzle manned the StarWarsShop.com booth handing out fliers to let these die hard fans know about the Zazzle Star Wars Special Collection. Of course the highlight of the entire trip had to be seeing Darth Vader get an autograph FROM Darth Vader (I tried to do that from myself once, but I told myself I didn’t have time, and maybe I would at the next show). Check out the rest of the Robcam shots, and all the Star Wars gear you could ever want in the Star Wars collection.

Viva la Veggielution!

May 29, 2007

Our very own btanory has begun the Veggielution, which is a war with or against veggies! Confused!? YEAH, me too! No worries though, that’s the great thing about fun shirts… they don’t necessarily have to have meaning (t-shirts are not your high school English class), as long as you get a good laugh. And as far as I can tell from this pic, the shirt passes the test.

Check out the rest of btanory’s gallery, Unleash your Inner Nerd. And hey, if you are starting your own revolution and want to let me know about it, then just send me one of those “electronic mails”, I’ll be listening for the little outlook sound that tells me I have friends, or more Viagra junk emails, either way good times.

Dads and Grads Appreciation

May 25, 2007

Note: this contest is now over. View the winners.

==========

(For those of you who are new to Zazzle Contests (beta!), make sure you read the About Zazzle Contests section.)

As both Father’s Day and Graduation approach, we thought it’d be fun to have a dual-themed contest that provides entrants the opportunity to show their appreciation for Dad or upcoming graduates. We’re looking for the best designs that (a) give thanks to Dad for all of the things he does OR (b) celebrates the pending arrival of graduation day for hard working students.

Only ONE ENTRY is permitted per person and we’ll be selecting two winning designs, one for each theme.

View Entries » | Go Create »

Prize:

There will be two winners to this contest.

1. The winner of the design that best gives thanks to Dad will receive:

2. The winner of the design that celebrates the pending arrival of graduation will receive:

  • $500.00 USD – COLD HARD CASH: whatever you want to do with it
  • Top-of-the-Line Framed Print: You can go bonkers using our media and framing options to create a graduation portrait that will last for generations to come. Do whatever you want for options, all the way up to $250.

How to Enter:

Submission deadline is 11:59 PM (PST) on June 9, 2007.

  1. Create your design and place it on a product (can be any product type … t-shirts, mugs, posters, stamps, you decide!). Make your product.
  2. Publish your product to the Zazzle marketplace with the tag “DadsAndGradsContest2007” (find out how to tag your product). If you have already published your design prior to the start of this contest, simply tag it “DadsAndGradsContest2007” to submit it.
  3. You’re almost done! To give yourself added publicity, don’t forget to leave a comment below with a link to the product page of your entry.

IMPORTANT: You may only enter one design (on one product) to the contest. You may NOT enter the same design on multiple products and you may NOT enter multiple designs. If you do, only your first entry will be eligible to win. View the contest rules.

How is the winner selected?

  • Once your product is in the Zazzle marketplace, other users will be able to rate it, view it, comment on it and also buy it. All of these factors will be used to determine the top twenty five entries for both of the contest themes. An internal Zazzle judging panel will select the ultimate winner from this set of fifty products (twenty five Father’s Day products and twenty five Graduation themed products). This means that you should tell your friends and family about your entry and encourage them to show their support by rating it, leaving a comment or buying the product … the more visibility you get, the better your chances to win!
  • Note to International Users: Due to contest rules, only entries from individuals within the US are eligible to win the prize.

Promote Your Entry!

  • Create a Zazzle panel showing all of the contest entries! Select a skin and click “Save & Finish” to get the embed code. Then place it on your blog, website, etc.
  • To learn how to embed your submission off of Zazzle, click “link to this” on the product page of your submitted design.

Zazzle at Maker Faire

May 24, 2007

Last weekend, a small contingent of Zazzle Employees invaded Maker Faire (yes that is how they spell it), which is is an annual meeting for do-it-yourselfers to show off weekend projects. Since Zazzle is all about bringing creations to life, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to see what our peers have been “making.” The Zazzle crew witnessed everything from a two-story nose-picking machine to a two-centimeter solar-powered robot. It was hot, it was fun and I think I might have eaten too many corndogs…

Some of our favorites:
A Human-sized Mouse Trap in Rube Goldberg style.

A Flame-spewing Fire Truck and other pyrotechnics.

Art made of Neon Lights from Peterson Neon.

A challenging 3D Marble Maze.

A Mini-terrain Mapping Demo complete with tiny cars from Microsoft Research.

Designs from Real Life Zazzlers

May 22, 2007

Just about every day the design team here reminds me that I should do a post on the designs by Zazzlers gallery (where they collectively contribute products). Finally, the time has come. The gallery is definitely a creativity explosion – it’s got a ton of whacked out permutations of the word ‘Zazzle’ in different themes, styles, and more. When RobCam (www.zazzle.com/habitforming) and I go on blogging trips I often wear a shirt from that gallery… gotta represent, ya know!

Anyway, I kept putting it off until I saw this animation from Serene, and it was definitely the straw that broke the blogging camel’s back:

Zazzle Me Serene

Check out the shirt she’s wearing called Man-Crafted by Zazzle, and the rest of the designs by Zazzlers are all at www.zazzle.com/zazzle. The design team frequently whips up cool new stuff, so join the fan club if you want email alerts on the latest-and-greatest.

Piñata Party

May 16, 2007

So I was just hanging out at Zazzle, waiting for the other guests to arrive for the big Cinco de Mayo party when I heard the faint sound of a festive Mariachi Band. I was so excited to join the celebration that I accidentally got tangled in some low hanging ropes. I yelled and yelled for help but no one seemed to hear me over the sound of the loud – yet glorious – Mariachi.

A little heartbroken, I was losing hope that the others would find me. But just as I was at my lowest, the partying Zazzlers began to funnel into the room where I was “hanging out.” I was excited because everyone was energetically circling around me, perhaps they were going to free me of my obvious (and embarrassing) entanglement.

I was trying to squirm my way out of when one of them hit me with a plastic stick… I was shocked, not that it hurt, but still. My guess was that he/she noticed that I was tangled up in the ropes and was trying to assist me out of my predicament…

Soon everyone was trying to help! One after another they enthusiastically tried to rescue me, jumping, spinning around, trying to knock me loose with bats (and even fists). These gestures, well intentioned, proved to be of little or no use. So, I continued to wiggle and spin until I finally broke free. But at the very same instant, an errant strike in the stomach caused my innards to explode onto the floor.

Everyone there – bless them – crowded around me to see if I was alright. I was better then alright! I was fortunate enough to land into a massive pile of candy, gum and all sorts of treats. What a party!
