Searching on Zazzle Just Got a Whole Lot Better

May 15, 2007

Just about a month ago we released a new version of search to make the marketplace easier to browse, much more dynamic and even more community powered. With all new features, it’s sometimes hard to predict how users will like it and how they’ll use it, so we decided to test the new search out in beta mode. We’re really glad we did that because we got great feedback from the community and were even able to watch people use it which resulted in new ideas.

In summary, most users loved the new search so much that we’ve decided to switch the site over completely. Starting from today, beta search is not so beta anymore.

Based on the feedback, we’ve added a couple of tweaks that we thought would make the experience better:

1. Share It / Favorite It – You can easily share products through IM or email and add products to your Favorites on every search result page. Pretty cool huh?

Zazzle Share It

2. Shortcuts – One day we noticed in our search logs that a lot of people were searching for “Tinkerbell” but we didn’t do a great job of surfacing all our great Disney content. To solve the problem, we came up with the idea of introducing search shortcuts for certain keywords like Tinkerbell, Tweety Bird, and even where is my order?. There’s a bunch more shortcuts on the site. Maybe you can type in random search terms and try to find them all if you’re bored at work!

3. Awards - Did you know that we give out a lot of awards everyday to the best products? For example, there’s Today’s Best which is chosen by our editors every morning. Every day, we award 10 products with the most views that day per product type. We’ve integrated this right into the search results – now you can check out all the past winners by going to the awards tab and clicking on the calendar to view day by day results. Congrats to all the winners!

PS – Keep watching for more updates
. Coming up next there is going to be a new easier way to rate your favorite products.

Practice Safe Designing

May 11, 2007

Designing a product on Zazzle is fun. But you know what they say…when you have fun, do it safely! No, you won’t need to go to a drugstore to stay safe on Zazzle. All you have to do is design within the lines! What do we mean?

Well, when we’re making all of the cards, buttons, and more that you order every day, our production teams work very hard to make sure every piece of your image and text are included in your final product. However, even sometimes, if you fill up the entire card area edge-to-edge with text, it sometimes becomes very difficult to make it just so.

Today we’ve just launched a new guide when you are designing products called the “safe area”. When you are designing your next products, you’ll want to keep all text and the key parts of your images (faces, etc.) within the safe area. Design within the lines, like so:

Safe Area

This will help our awesome production team make sure you get the product exactly as you designed it. And even if you slip up and leave something important just outside of the safe area, they’ll take care of you anyway.

Our production folks were so happy that we implemented this safe area, some of them actually cried. Real tears. No, really.

Have you passed the Stewie?

May 9, 2007

So sometimes people send me cool links, and this one from the Kansan.com is quite cool. Fox’s Family Guy TV show, in honor of their upcoming 100th episode, is having a little competition that is sweeping college campuses across the nation. Basically students on campus have to take wild and crazy pictures with the official plush Stewie Dolls being mailed to campuses by Fox. Read the complete article about it, or check out the official contest site to see entries.

You know what I think would be cool? Wearing this Lois shirt (below) and making the face like Stewie does… or have someone holding the doll pointing at you as you dress up like Lois. Too much? Maybe, but if you really want to win that sweet prize package you would do it….

Check out the rest of the Family Guy t-shirts and post a comment with a better idea, I double dare you.

The Leatherback Trust Joins Zazzle

May 8, 2007

Check out one of the newest members to our Zazzle Community Giving program. The Leatherback Trust helps to save one of the oldest species of turtles (65 million year old) on the planet. Here is a little more information about the Leatherback Turtle Trust.

The Leatherback Trust is a non-profit foundation established by James R. Spotila, Ph.D. to save the leatherback turtle and other sea turtles from extinction. The Leatherback Trust scientists were instrumental in founding a new national park, Parque Marino Las Baulas, on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. The park protects the most important leatherback nesting beaches in the Pacific Ocean….(more)

Here is a shirt from their gallery, also notice that it is on American Apparel Organic T-shirt. Coincidence? I think not!

Awesome Zazzle Story

May 7, 2007

So remember when I asked people for stories about their Zazzle products? Well it turns out one of your contributing compadres had a great story for me. Here is what LL11funway had to say…

Here is the story. About a year ago my boyfriend asked me to design a favor for his 45th High School Reunion on Zazzle. He knows I dabble in design work (about 20 hrs a week, at least LOL). Anyways, I was in hot pursuit of the famous Wildcat which was their high school mascot. Needless to say, this icon was produced as a sketch which means no digital copies, no reproductions, no photos, no anything of good quality to capture the famous creature. Reproductions would not do only the original Wildcat, and incidentally the colors had to be black and orange no substitutes. So after about 3 weeks of searching for this elusive “cat”, I finally found the original graphic. It was not on the alumni or school website but he was mysteriously hidden waiting to “attack” in rage at the next Winter Park High School football game. I found him buried in a football program, so he did still exist anyways. I quickly pasted him immediately into Zazzle as now I had the prized Wildcat in my possession. I started experimenting and found it looked great on the Zazzle white mug with the black handle so the design truly was orange and black on a white background. The committee all loved it but woe, the budget could not allow a quantity purchase of the Wildcat mug so we went to Wildcat keychains, also designed on Zazzle. So with one mug in my possession (which everyone liked) I took it to the reunion picnic the day before and was surprised when everyone wanted one, with no price break for quantity, they were willing to pay the individual price. I took the money and ran home to zazzle and shipped them directly to each request. It is a great memento and I have another class that is interested in the same mug for their reunion. Of course I will customize it with their date. It was a fun experience. The Wildcat lives on.

Now that was a great uplifting story, your turn! Send me your stories and I will tell the world!

Compete for Zazzle Products!

May 3, 2007

Wislander MugSo you thought only Zazzle had contests with our products?! Well mistaken you are, my loyal readers. A little bee made me aware of two contests that contributors are running on their own pages:

Check out the Wislander Mug contest here

Check out the Studio524 T-Shirt Contest here (This ends like tomorrow, so hurry)

Also, let me know if you hear of any other contests, I like winning things, and I think I can enter contests that we don’t run right? And if everyone lets me know of just one contest then I won’t have one little bee telling me I will have an entire colony of bees! Think of all the honey, glorious honey….
