The winner absolutely deserved to win- my favorite car in the contest! Just wondering what thecriteria was for the top designs? How many actually sold, was it based on votes?

  8. tshirtfun Says:

FOUR of the honorable mentions are NOT working templates, and therefore, should not have won. This is not fair to all of those who actually followed the contest rules. Didn’t the judges actually test the entries before awarding prizes???

  9. Kelly Says:

Thanks t-shirt fun. I completely agree. At the risk of having a billion ‘sore loser’ comments about our posts, I have to say I’m a little saddened to think that all the effort many of us put into making the templates ACTUALLY work, was in vain. Let alone that some of the designs (composition wise) will take away from a family photo, which should be the true ‘feature’ in the design.

  10. Kelly Says:

Also, we all need to be a little more honest when we leave comments. If a design not working properly, or anyone has suggestions to make the design better, I am sure we would all appreciate the cnstructive criticism. It only helps us all make better quality products, which in turn builds a bigger customer base for us all. Thanks to all those who have offered sincere help to me in the past few contests and about my other products!

  11. Luna Says:

Yeah, I screwed up on the template thing. I *thought* I did it right, but alas … it’s not correst and working right. Does anyone know if there a way to correct the template without losing your votes?

Congrats tot the winners — I love the one they picked for the grand prize – extremely deserving. :-)

  12. Spice Says:

I messed up as well Luna and didn’t realise I had made a mistake until I read about it on the forum. I have lots of templates and it figures this was the only one I’ve had not work correctly :(
I did contact Zazzle about it as soon as I knew and told them. I asked if I should remove the faulty one and was told not yet, but that I could make a good version. So I made the new version of the same card and placed it on my main gallery wall next to my contest entry and placed a note on it to let buyers know my contest version wasn’t working right and if the wished to purchase the template to use the replacement one. That is the best I could figure to do until I hear further. I also want to mention how delighted I was to receive the HM. You see I am an International member (Canada), and I know I can’t receive the prize. But I was just thrilled to have my entry picked as one of the HM’s. I’m doubtful if I’ll enter any other contests here though. :(

And I completly agree, Paul did a wonderful job on his card and I’m very happy for him. Congrats again Paul :)

  13. totallypainted Says:

Congratulations Winners!!!! Loved all the cards and had a blast viewing them all! :)

  14. AJsGraphics Says:

Don’t feel bad Luna and Spice, I too messed up on my template. And yes, I did read the contest rules, and yes, I tried to follow them but not sure what happened. It certainly wasn’t intentional. What’s even more puzzling, I sold that card and no one said that they had problems inserting their image into it and commented after they received it that they were very pleased. So was it working or not? Since it was purchased and the buyers were able to insert their image even if it wasn’t as should be, is it still not a working template?

I’m like you Spice, I doubt that I’ll enter any more contests either. It would have been nice if someone would have said something during the contest instead of the bashing afterwards.
    Jo
    Congrats Paul!

  15. Kelly Says:

I hope many of the comments are not viewed as “bashing”, because all the designs in this contest and on this site clearly had a lot of effort put ino them, and there is no intention of ill-will toward sthe designs/designers themselves.

I’ve seen contradictions with the ‘rules’ vs. winners in the last two contests.
(“Remember, it’s only one entry per person, it MUST be a card template, and creating a new template is highly recommended. All entries that don’t conform to the contest standards will be removed from the contest.”)
I think I will consider the rules more as ‘guidelines’ in the future.

In the end, the contest is there to promote good designs, and make money for Zazzle (and it’s designers), so it makes sense not to keep designs that might be good sellers. Even if they don’t adhere to the rules of a contest.

I think they would do beter to have the contests ‘money-free,’ and only have gift certificates and shameless promotion of the winning design. I bet there would be fewer complaints when there’s not $1000 or a $2500 wacom tablet at stake.

As I said before… the “nice design” comments are great and make us all feel good, but let’s all put ourselves out there a little bit. Write what you would like to see different about someone’s product that would make you like it even more. We are not utilizing the communication tools Zazzle gives us to our full advantage. Maybe they could add an IM feature for designers??

To make designs that sell, we need real feedback. Instead of WINNING $1000, we need to focus more on selling our products to MAKE $1000. We’re all adults, we can make this site work for us.

But that,s aid, I hope everyone continues to enter the contests. They’re a great way to light a fire under us to showcase our best work.

  16. Kelly Says:

… and I should have spell checked that before I sent it…

  17. DT Says:

Sorry Kelly I don’t understand that line

” In the end, the contest is there to promote good designs, and make money for Zazzle (and it’s designers), so it makes sense not to keep designs that might be good sellers. Even if they don’t adhere to the rules of a contest.” ….

    Sorry whats it mean?

Also your part ” I think they would do better to have the contests ‘money-free,’ and only have gift certificates and shameless promotion of the winning design. I bet there would be fewer complaints when there’s not $1000 or a $2500 wacom tablet at stake.”

As someone who can’t win the money etc… I can still see the injustice in letting someones design win when it is their second entry and they let both run along side each other .. other people could of done the same if thats the case and given themselves more of a chance to win …

And no one was bashing anyone …its not bashing to point out some dont work as templates… I wrote out a whole easy to use template guide in the forum while the contest was on .. of course the forum was closed for a while .. but I tried to help as much as I could .. and so did others .. offers were open to email people and get help in making these cards .. also someone said that maybe people should tell them if their cards wrong .. I did on a few occasions but its down to the individual to test it themselves before entering the contest .. also zazzle judges should of tested them before giving the awards … makes you wonder how they were picked

My opinion on this … and I know no gives a s**t what I think .. but if these contests are going to keep running .. and give us the contributors a chance of greater exposure then the end results should be consistent .. I only remember one contest being run without any problems and that was the pirate one .. I love working on zazzle but sometimes things can just get too much

  18. tshirtfun Says:

It is not “bashing” to simply let someone know that there is a mistake with their design. I would certainly want to know if my template didn’t work, and I certainly would not accept a prize if I made a mistake. Constructive criticism has been very helpful to those of us who have been here a while & have successful shops.

There are many of us who offered our help making the templates. DT posted instructions on the forum, and some of us helped through emails, and we worked on transparencies for those who do not have the necessary software. We offered our help publicly on the forums, because we wanted everyone to have an equal chance… and we want to make sure that our community is not full of features that do not work. If a customer tries out a non-working template, before seeing my working template, they may be turned away from Zazzle altogether. Yes, some customers are saavy enough to figure out how to customize… but that’s NOT the point of making a working template that is user friendly.

People should have tested their own templates before submitting, and Zazzle DEFINITELY should have tested them too!

If a contest is run by a major corporation (coke, BK, good houskeeping, etc…), it is legally required to follow the rules. We should be required to do the same.

  19. Matt Says:

    Quote tshirtfun,
“If a contest is run by a major corporation (coke, BK, good houskeeping, etc…), it is legally required to follow the rules. We should be required to do the same.”

I agree completely. But it doesn’t matter whether or not it is a major corporation. The law is the law. The rules constituted a legally binding contract. Entry of the card constituted acceptance of those terms and conditions. It’s unlawful for them to award any prize if the terms and conditions were not met sufficiently.

As someone who did not enter this contest, I cannot be accused of being a ‘sore loser’ but I know that there were a lot of wonderful fully functional entries that deserved the prizes more than others.

    Quote: Kelly
“I think I will consider the rules more as ‘guidelines’ in the future.”

I too have noticed discrepancies between the ‘official rules’ and the criteria that they actually use. I can pretty much guarantee that the winners were based almost entirely on sales. After all, Zazzle will favor people who make the most money for them.

I do hope that Zazzle bucks up its act for future contests.

  20. KirstenEdwards Says:

    Congrats to everyone!

I myself had a hard time understanding the instructions on how to make a template, even though I have both the cover image and the photo area on there, it is a working template. I have busted my butt on everyone of these contests as well as everyone else. Zazzle is going to pick who they want and I can say for a fact it’s not because of sales. I sold not one! But I made a new card, which was one of the rules, I followed the theme, and it was a clean clear design. It was not based on votes or comments either. I agree that some of the templates didn’t work, and maybe people are shy to ask for help, but the designs are all great. Like someone else said, why didn’t anyone step up and say something before it was over? If I’d have known someone’s template wasn’t working I’d have told them, instead of not telling them thinking it would disqualify them and give my card a better chance at winning. Sorry if that offends anyone, but it’s the truth. Last contest I told quite a few people that there logo would be disqualified, and that they needed to do it over so they would have a chance. We need to learn to be more supportive of each other instead of having all this bashing. After every contest a lot of people complain of the winners…sad but true. Let’s be more helpful to one another in the future.

Thats great Kirsten but you too voted and commented on some of those entries that didn’t work as templates why didn’t you let them know?, is it because you either didn’t notice or as you said you didn’t tell them as it might disqualify them from the contest giving you a better chance, my bet is it wasn’t the latter so why should everyone else notice these cards didn’t work and not you?

I’m pleased there are now some IHM’s and as someone who didn’t take part in the contest I can’t be called a ” sore loser ” my only complaint about this contest has been that rules don’t seem to matter so where is the incentive for most to keep taking part?

  22. AJsGraphics Says:

Am I reading the rules incorrectly? It says:

There is a limit of one entry per person. If you submit multiple designs, only the first entry from any individual will be judged as part of the Contest. Additional attempts to enter will be disqualified.

It doesn’t say that there is a limit to submissions, just entries and that the first entry (submission?) will be part of the contest. I also read it that “Additional” attempts (submissions?) will not be part of the contest. I’m not reading it that “all” entries will be disqualified.

I’m not taking it that you can’t have more than one submission, just one entry.

  23. KirstenEdwards Says:

    To incognito:

I just didn’t notice because I had a lot going on and didn’t even have time to leave comments everyday like I like to do. I would go to the card and scroll down fast to leave a comment when I could so I never saw the area where it shows the template, that’s how I missed it! And I sure voted and commented on everyone of them! i know I gave 5 stars to every single entry except for those who had more than one entry and then just gave them a vote on the one I liked mostI thought I was the only one that had a hard time with the instructions, but apparently not. I’m very supportive of the artists and didn’t aim to tick any one off! Like I said too if I had noticed I would have said something in a polite way to give them the heads up because everyone deserves a chance. There were soooo many great designs I’m just glad I didn’t have to judge them. I’m also glad they have the IHM now too. i just don’t understand why they can’t get the prize money too. that doesn’t seem fair to me. i sincerely hope I didn’t make anyone mad. things get misunderstood and that’s usually why I don’t say anything. So now I’ll just let everyone else talk it out. Have a fantabulous day, and congrats again to everyone! :)

it was that second submission that one of the winners won on .. the one that shouldn’t of counted .. either zazzle over looked that when picking the winners or just didnt care .. and thats why a lot of people are finding this contest to be unfair in the outcome .. I entered the contest with no expectations of winning because I cant legally take part .. but now I’m hoping that as zazzle no longer go by the rules maybe they will lift the legal requirement on having to be an American citizen too :) ( doubt it but its worth a try lol )

And Kirsten … I understand what you’re saying too .. and believe me I tried to test the templates and I tried to help people .. but there never is enough hours in the day … so how about just everyone saying congrats to the winners and moving on from this .. I just hope that zazzle will listen and run a contest fairly and without and confusion next time as it can hurt both the winners and other contestants and thats not a good thing as all of this could of been avoided ..

So good luck in the next contest guys .. and I hope the winners especially the big prize winner knows where to find my stores :)

  25. LadyOyuki Says:

I think my biggest problem is simply this: I tried to make my template better at the advice of two people I was very thankful to for their opinions and I still had no sales on my card anyway…

but that’s not what is bothering me…

What is bothering me is the simple fact that I’m sick and tired of NOT getting any judges feedback! Sorry if I seem heated about this, but I would love to know why they didn’t like my card enough to win or perhaps what little they did like about it if anything.

I fully and always appreciate the feedback given by my fellow zazzlers – but their comments apparently don’t faze the judging process at all I suppose.

Would someone please tell me why the judges can’t give at least a moment of their time to comment on our entries???

I do think that the winner deserved it btw. Congrats.

  26. AJsGraphics Says:

DT, your post is the first post that I’ve seen stating that it was whoever’s second submission that placed. I was unaware of the fact it was a “second” submission you were referring to. I’ve not taken the time (nor will I ) to see who it is that you’re referring to but now that it’s clear that it wasn’t a first submission, then I’ll agree that it’s against the rules as they are stated.

  27. Perlyyyy Says:

I agree with LadyOyuki, I would like to know, after entering several of these contests, just what the judges DON’T like about my entry/entries. I have yet to win, place, or show or Honorable Mention, and its frustrating. Looking back on some of my entries I can see the ones that kind of had a shot and the ones that didn’t. My template, if it was a true template, I thought was very different and a picture would have looked real nice in there. That is my opinion and its biased, of course.

As far as sales go on my entries, my entry for the Logo contest sold the most, which was only 3 tees counting my own purchase of 1, which by the way came to me way to small that I could not get a decent picture of myself wearing it, thats how tight it was. Sizing of these tees for females is another totally ridiculous thing, for another time. But, 2 people that I didn’t even know, bought copies and I did not even recieve HM. I am not thrilled, at all. There should have been more clear cut, not confusing instructions on the templates so that people would know that they had made one, that right there in itself, is ridiculous. These are my first entries into any type of art contests, as I fell out of art for many years. And so sorry to Zazzle but they really aren’t good memories either. I am just being honest. I want to thank DT for helping me with my template.

The types of contests are fun, and the comradery is cool, but the finish leaves me sad, cold and wondering what I am doing wrong. I don’t spend much time on zazzle anymore. Not that it matters at all to those that run Zazzle. I am but a very miniscule, super tiny fish, in Zazzle’s very large picture of money and success.

  28. dragonflywatcher Says:

Ok fine, I didn’t win. My complaint however is that my entry is not even in the Holiday Card Template section. I even emailed Zazzle to ask to be included (something I don’t think I should have had to do considering that my card entry seemed fairly popular – vote wise) but I have yet to get a reply and my card is still not included.

All the winners did a tremendous job with their entries but I notice a definate “theme” of cartoony and cute (with a few exceptions). And this seems true for their past contests. I personally would like to see more artistic diversity in the chosen designs – if Zazzle are only looking for cute and cartoony then maybe they should stipulate that in the rules.

Here’s my card entry – you tell me if it is worthy of being included the the Holiday Card Template section. Be honest please – I can handle criticism. I would just like to know if I am deluding myself or if I should continue to fight for my design.
