Last week, 3 Zazzlers including myself participated in the awesomeness in Texas, otherwise known as SXSW. Fun was had, bands played mostly great music, beer and bbq were in abundance.
To commemorate this huge week in music, Zazzle launched Lyrical Inspirations Fan Merchandise in collaboration with SonyATV, the premiere music publishing company with the largest share of radio play in the U.S. market. To launch the Lyrical Inspirations Fan Merch initiative, Artsprojekt procured original art from some of the world’s most cutting-edge talent including Andy Howell, Ginger Che, Anneli Olander, Noumeda, Steve Thomas, and Thomas Fuchs. Artists and fans alike are now able to create unique designs inspired by classics such as “I Fought the Law,” “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” “Come Together,” “Like a Virgin,” “Heartbreak Hotel,” within a protected system of feedback and compensation. The result is pretty amazing, and we invite all to participate!

Various other amazing acts that we caught in no particular order: She and Him, Broken Bells, Surfer Blood, The Temper Trap, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Miike Snow, Matt Morris, Carney, Band of Skulls, Scissor Sisters, Rey Fresco, Nicole Atkins, Suzanne Vega, Charanga Cakewalk, We Were Promised Jetpacks, Dr. Dog, Jakob Dylan and the Three Legs (featuring Neko Case and Kelly Hogan), Neon Trees, Everything Everything, Chasing Kings, Crash Kings, and the illustrious Bone Thugs n’ Harmony… I could go on and on.
The week was also filled with new tech launches and fresh ideas. 4 highlights that I came away with:
- Crowd-sourcing/Crowd-funding is injecting fresh energy into the music industry and is serving to keep bands afloat financially and creatively. Leading the way are companies like Kickstarter, Topspin, Bandbox, Nimbit, and Creative Allies.
- Social media engagement is best utilized when focused; it does not have to be daunting and it can be fun. Location based media was the hot new word on the Austin streets with companies like Gowalla, Four Square, and Whrrl asking everyone to check in here, there, and everywhere. They may have some great functions, but I am happy to stick with Twitter, Facebook, and MySpace.
- Augmented Reality is not just for creepy dudes and James Cameron fans’, it has many real life applications that truly augment reality. Companies like Total Immersion, Zugara, Redlaser, and Layar are doing some pretty amazing stuff.
- Less is almost always more. More often than not, filtering and condensing gets the point across more effectively. A great example of this throughout the convention center: the trash bins here are labeled “Compost / Recycle / Landfill.” That last word makes us all think about the end result of our behavior… And perhaps this is why Twitter filled up 3 exhibit halls full of folks for their less than stellar keynote, because 140 characters is plenty.
