Zazzle Featured Seller Interview with lowvincentyh

January 20, 2011

Vincent, from the Zazzle store lowvincentyh, answers some questions about his illustrations, and his time at Zazzle. Check out the interview below and don’t forget to check out his store lowvincentyh!

Deionn Necklace

Zazzle: Give us a brief bio, where you are from and when you started making art.

Vincent: To begin I just want to thank (you) Jes for the interview. I am a vector based cartoon character designer residing in Singapore. I started making vector cartoon character art in 2002. It started with a simple profile picture that I created for my online profile page. That little project ignited my passion towards vector cartoon character illustrations.

Zazzle: A lot of your work is vector illustrations, are there other styles of art you enjoy as well?

Vincent: I always been wanting to make non vector based illustrations, like painting my cartoon art with acrylic paint or another medium. But, there are things to consider before I can proceed. I think I have to get a scanner so I can start painting and get this thought out of my mind.

Zazzle: What has been your favorite design you’ve created, and why?

Vincent: I have to pick Abbot as it was my first cartoon art with an Asian theme that uses bold outlines. It’s still one of my favorites to this day.

Abbot Original Card

Zazzle: When you’re not creating art, what are your other hobbies?

Vincent: I like to do interior rendering.

Zazzle: What got you interested in selling your art on Zazzle?

Vincent: To have someone assist in the production of merchandise, shipping and customer service so as an artist/designer I can focus on the creation process.

Zazzle: What tips can you give someone who is just starting out on Zazzle?

Vincent: This is something I read on the Internet and I like to pass it on to all new Zazzlers. To run a successful store is not easy and it does not come overnight. It requires a lot of hard work and promoting your works on various platforms. Patience and perseverance is the key to success.

Thanks Vincent!

Show Off Your Backside with Chor Boogie

January 17, 2011

Part of the Backside campaign, mentioned last week, was putting up hundreds of posters around San Francisco featuring Seller art on cases. In addition to each set of Seller posters, we also included one poster that was blank. This “create your own” poster was designed to encourage a passerby to draw their own case on the street, in person, to show that Zazzle can empower an artist from any walk of life. Check out the video below of Zazzle and Artsprojekt Artist Chor Boogie partaking in a live “create your own” session on Market Street.

Did you see Chor Boogies custom poster in San Francisco? What’s your favorite case to design for, ipad or iphone? Share your thoughts below.

Zazzle Featured Seller Interview with karyn_lewis

January 13, 2011

Karyn, from the Zazzle store karyn_lewis, answers some questions about her art, her inspirations, and her time at Zazzle. Check out the interview below and don’t forget to check out her store karyn_lewis!

Skipping Rope Poster

Zazzle: Give us a brief bio, where you are from and when you started making art.

Karyn: I grew up in Boulder, Colorado, and like most artists, I’ve been doing art as long as I can remember. Since I’ve always wanted to be an artist, I studied art in college, and earned a BFA in Drawing from Colorado State University. After some odd jobs, including time as an arts and entertainment reporter, I now live in South Bend, Indiana where I’m a stay at home mom and freelance illustrator.

Zazzle: How would you describe your style?

Karyn: My style is all over the map. Since I work entirely digitally in Photoshop CS5, I really have tons of freedom to explore whatever strikes my fancy at the moment, from vector design to abstract painting and everything in between, including realistic portraits and whimsical kids illustration.

Zazzle: When you’re not creating art, what are your other hobbies?

Karyn: I minored in theater in college, and before my son was born I was active acting and directing in Community Theater. I’ve recently taken up beading, and I’m a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, and hope to be a published author someday.

Zazzle: What’s your inspiration for your designs?

Karyn: I think life and other artists. There isn’t an artistic style I don’t love, and because of that, my muse is all over the map. Right now I’m on a minimalist, pattern kick, and I’ve been drawing more with vectors instead of mimicking more traditional styles of art. But what’s going on in my personal life influences me as well. For example, I recently created personalized birthday stickers for a friend whose son was turning five.

Chibli Cupid T-Shirt

Zazzle: What’s your favorite Zazzle feature? How do you use it?

Karyn: I absolutely love that Zazzle gives us the option to let customers personalize our work. That, and the power of the product create tools. I love getting in there with each product and placing the art just how I want it.

Zazzle: What’s your favorite Zazzle product to create?

Karyn: My recent favorites have been the invitations, mugs and Speck Cases.

Zazzle: What got you interested in selling your art on Zazzle?

Karyn: Actually, Zazzle did. I joined a couple years ago after a Zazzle employee reached out to me. Now I’m so glad I did. Every year Zazzle seems to get better, rolling out new quality products and adding great new features to the site. I can’t wait to see what 2011 brings!

Zazzle: What tips can you give someone who is just starting out on Zazzle?

Karyn: One, Zazzle can seem frustrating at first when you’re trying to create products because at times the process is slow. Instead of being frustrated, grab a cup of coffee, relax and revel in the fact that you can really get in there and tinker with each one until its perfect.

Two, make sure that you take time with your product titles and descriptions, and make them rich and really describe each product. Good descriptions will help customers, and the search engines, find your products.

Thanks Karyn!

The Darkness of Batman Art

January 12, 2011

Rumors are swirling on the interwebs today as to who Christopher Nolan will choose for the leading lady in the third and final (*tear*) Dark Knight Batman movies. My bet is Anne Hathaway, but that’s another story.

All this talk about Batman and the Dark Knight films made me want to go digging into Batman (as a person) a bit to see what I could find. As a superhero, he’s awesome at fighting crime with expensive gadgets (a Batman iPhone case is the closest you’ll get) and keeping Gotham clean. But as a person, he’s a very dark and brooding character. This darkness is reflected heavily in how Batman acts which is represented in the art within the Batman Zazzle store. Take a look at some of my favorite products below from our custom Batman Store. They’re dark, twisted, and most importantly really cool.

Are you excited to see Anne Hathaway in the new Batman movie? What’s your favorite Batman Product? What’s your favorite Batman movie? Share below!

Behind the Scenes: The Show Off Your Backside Campaign

January 10, 2011

As you know, we launched custom iPhone cases and custom iPad cases with a fun message: Show off your backside. The Zazzle/Speck case empowers you to make a case with a custom back that is a true representation of yourself and your passion – and we want you to show it off! The campaign was a lot of fun for us to put together and hopefully for you as well.

To get it done, we employed local models and great case designs from the Zazzle community. The resulting graphics were used on Zazzle and plastered on posters throughout San Francisco. For those that are curious how it all came together (and to see the posters) check out the video below for an under-the-hood look at the “Show Off Your Backside” campaign.

Do you live in SF? Did you see the Zazzle posters?
