After Japan’s win in yesterday’s Women’s World Cup final there was lots of celebrating by Japanese fans around the world and some of that celebration even made it onto Zazzle.co.jp in the form of product creation. It’s amazing to see the Japanese patriotic product creation that was sparked by the win in Germany contrasted against the US domain trying to forget the loss with honey badger t-shirt creation and iPod Touch case creation…I can’t wait to see what happens after the next international sporting event. See below for some of my favorite recently created products from the Zazzle Japanese domain.

Zazzle Featured Seller Interview with MarkMurphyCreative
July 14, 2011Mark, from the Zazzle store MarkMurphyCreative, talks to us about his artistic style and his time at Zazzle. Check out the interview below and don’t forget to check out his store MarkMurphyCreative!
Zazzle: Give us a brief bio, where you are from and when you started making art.
Mark: I’ve been in the design industry for around 14 years and trained in the Fashion Industry which I think shows in my illustrative style.
I’m based in Ripon, North Yorkshire in the UK and run Mark Murphy Creative, which is a multi-creative design studio offering the complete design service.
My vision and creativity has already led to many prestigious clients to choose our service over that offered by larger agencies. I take pride in my ability to work closely with my clients – understanding their need and delivering forward thinking solutions that really meet their requirements.
I strongly believe that ENERGY + CREATIVITY = INNOVATION!
Zazzle: What’s your inspiration for your designs?
Mark: That’s really hard to pin down as I’m generally inspired by everything and anything. Being a designer I have that designer’s eye which is always looking at things a little differently wherever I am.
Zazzle: How would you describe your style?
Mark: I would certainly describe 80% of my illustrative work as adorably cute with a contemporary twist. Add to that a dash of humour injected for good measure and you’re pretty much there.
Zazzle: Any artists you look up to when it comes to designing?
Mark: There are lots of designers I take inspiration from in a number of fields; from Eames and Scandinavian furniture designers to product designers like Philippe Starke and Karim Rashid. I’m also a huge fan of everything Pixar and was brought up with American Comics from a young age, so I take a lot of inspiration from those. In fact, it was reading and drawing from those comics that inspired me to become a designer.
Zazzle: What has been your favorite design you’ve created, and why?
Mark: That really does change by the day and even by the hour. Saying that I really do love creating cute characters and also enjoy doing ‘Mod’ inspired designs.
Zazzle: What got you interested in selling your art on Zazzle?
Mark: I’d considered using print on demand sites for a while but wasn’t impressed with what was out there until I found Zazzle. I’m a Mac man and consider Zazzle a Mac to other sites, which feel like a PC. I also saw it as a way to get my work out to more people and to generate an additional revenue stream.
Zazzle: What tips can you give someone who is just starting out on Zazzle?
Mark: I can’t say this enough but persevere, persevere, persevere. Everything new can seem difficult but take a step back and it will all become clear after a few days
Try and add new products on a daily basis, and only put a design on a product if it fits. Also, organise your store into categories from the start as this will make it easier in the long run, and your customers will be able to find your products more easily.
Additionally, if you have a problem, the forums are a great place to get answers. The forums are also a great place to let the community know about ‘Today’s Best Awards’ you’ve received, and sales you’ve made.
Finally, just have fun.
Thanks Mark!
When Does the Narwhal Bacon?
July 13, 2011Have you heard this phrase? Attempting to see how far reaching this phrase is; we asked several Zazzle employees for their answer:
|
|
It seems that this strange combination of narwhals and bacon hasn’t reached many people yet, but don’t worry if you’re one of them because we’ve got you covered! The Answer: The narwhal bacons at midnight. Originating in 2009 from comments on the website Reddit, this odd but funny phrase quickly became a way to identify as a Reddit user similar to using a secret code.
|
|
|
It seems the phrase and narwhals in general are starting to trend. We suspect this is most likely due to the awesomeness of bacon and maybe some superstar power from the narwhal’s cousin the unicorn.

Interestingly enough, there are currently no Sellers offering Narwhal + Bacon products. This might be an opportunity waiting for you!
*Note: This might be the scary whale one of the employees was talking about.

API Developer Contest: Zazzle + Aviary Mashup
July 12, 2011
What’s better than a single API contest? How about a double API contest! A double API contest means double the fun, double the potential, and of course double the prizes (the prizes are better than double mint gum). We’ve teamed up with Aviary, innovators of an amazing photo effects API, to launch the Zazzle + Aviary content API Developer Contest. Read on to learn more.
The Challenge
Take the power of the Aviary Effects API and the Zazzle Create-a-Product API (Advanced PDF documentation 1, 2, 3) to build an awesome application that allows users to have fun with photos and create products all at once (1,000 bonus points for the developer that integrates a THIRD random API into their application). Easy right? If you’re having trouble coming up with a creative idea, Aviary has a brainstorm list of great ideas to get the 1s and 0s flowing in your head.
The Pay-Off
All valid entrants will be honored in the contest gallery and have a chance to win:
- Grand Prize: $500 Zazzle gift certificate, $500 in Aviary dollars, contest t-shirt and stickers

What’s more important, the end of the Shuttle program or LA’s Carmageddon?
July 12, 2011So what do you think people are searching for on Zazzle? Are they searching for product to commemorate the end of the NASA Space Shuttle program which enjoyed over thirty years of enriching scientific research and outer-orbit exploration? Or, are they searching for products in relation to the colossal traffic nightmare this weekend’s closure of The 405 (why does everyone in LA start freeway names with “the”?) aptly dubbed, “Carmageddon” will generate?
While the Space Shuttle program was popular at the start of the month, the fear of LA commuters is quickly overpowering space exploration and trending towards new heights. This might be because Carmageddon makes for a funny t-shirt or because people might care about their commute a bit more than space history. Why do you think Carmageddon is so popular? Will the Debt Ceiling be more popular? Share in the comments!

It’s the Final Countdown!
July 8, 2011
|
We’re leaving together But still it’s farewell And maybe we’ll come back To earth, who can tell? I guess there is no one to blame We’re leaving ground Will things ever be the same again? It’s the final countdown. |
Today marks the end of an era with the final voyage of Space Shuttle Atlantis. While many Sellers have created products to commemorate the last space shuttle launch, and others have felt sad as they watched the end of the space shuttle program, the Honey Badger continued to not care.
