Year in Review – Best of 2011

December 29, 2011

Over the last 12 months a lot has happened in the world (and the internet) that has influenced the marketplace here at Zazzle.  Since the year is coming to a close we’re going to take a look back at the best trends of 2011. This year’s review showcases the top memes, the popular trends, winning, royal marriages, the victories, the kindness of community helping those in need, and more.

Here are my top 5 – be sure to check our Best of 2011 page for all the top trends.

1.) Who doesn’t care…

- Honey Badger don’t care! This popular meme has taken over the marketplace since the video that started it all went viral, and has been used for all occasions, including Halloween, Christmas, and even the upcoming election.

2.) Winning, Duh!

- Charlie Sheen was ‘living the Sheen dream’ and won big this year, and so did everyone who was watching.  His unforgettable one-liners inspired a lot of amazing t-shirts designs… he even opened his own Zazzle Store.

3.) Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue

- A lot of people dream of a fairytale wedding, and this year Kate Middleton got just that as the world watched her marry Prince Williams in April.

4.) Was that supposed to be today?

- The Rapture came and went again and again this year… maybe 2012? #doubtful

5.) The darkest night leads to the brightest day

- The overwhelming support and charity after the Japan earthquake showed that the world can join together to help out those in need.

Zazzle Featured Seller Interview with dryfhout

December 29, 2011

Zazzler Maria, from the Zazzle store dryfhout, talks with us about her inspirations, her favorite design and what her time on Zazzle.  Check out the interview below and don’t forget to check out her store dryfhout!

Save the Date Message in a Bottle Invitation

Zazzle: First off, tell us a little bit about yourself.

Maria: I am a wife, mother and grandmother and I love all three parts of me. I live on Lake Macatawa in Holland, Michigan, and enjoy all four seasons. Photography has always been my interest since I was a little girl and that interest had increased as the years went on. When I lost my job, I got real serious about selling my images on the Internet. I also sell my greeting cards in 4 local stores.

Zazzle: How would you describe your style?

Maria: I am a pretty basic gal. I do like the vintage textured effects that one can use for their photographs.

Zazzle: What’s your inspiration for your designs?

Maria:  My inspirations come from within. I jot down many ideas (even when I am driving) as they pop into my head. I thank God for those ideas. He helps me think outside the box which does not come easy for me.

Zazzle: What have been your favorite design you’ve created, and why?

Maria:  I love taking pictures at the beach. There is a famous lighthouse that is 2 miles from me. It is named “Big Red.” That lighthouse is the most photographed lighthouse on the Great Lakes. “Big Red” is in many of my product designs.

Sails up Mousepad

Zazzle: Any artists you look up to when it comes to designing?

Maria: Trudy Wilkerson

Zazzle: Do you have any fun stories about being a seller on Zazzle?

Maria: When I sold 850 Christmas cards last week, I about fell out of my chair. I was so excited.

Zazzle: What was the very first product you ever sold on Zazzle?

Maria: It was a mousepad.

Zazzle: What got you interested in selling your art on Zazzle?

Maria: I started uploading images to microstock sites in 2007 and became aware of Zazzle. I thought I would try it out and even though it was slow going at first, I stuck with it and now Zazzle is one of my main stores that I focus on.

Zazzle: What tips can you give someone who is just starting out on Zazzle?

Maria: Produce good quality images. Keywords are so important for a buyer to find your product. Don’t ever give up!

Thanks Maria!

Zazzle Featured Seller Interview with kerrinsellstshirts

December 22, 2011

New Zazzler Kerrin, from the Zazzle store kerrinsellstshirts, talks with us about her style and what she’s looking forward to on Zazzle.  Check out the interview below and don’t forget to check out her store kerrinsellstshirts!

Hipster Cat Poster

Zazzle: Give us a brief bio, where you’re from and when you started making art.

Kerrin: Hi! My name’s Kerrin and I’m a seventeen year old high school senior from New Jersey. I’ve been really into art ever since I was a little kid and I’ve had a passion for digital graphic design ever since I first learned how to use Photoshop…probably around fourth grade or so.

Zazzle: What is your inspiration for your designs?

Kerrin: Well, I spend a lot of time on the internet, so a lot of my inspiration comes from something funny I might have seen or whatever trend happens to be popular and circulating around at the time.  Unfortunately the internet is also pretty good for procrastinating…

Zazzle: When you’re not creating art, what are your other hobbies?

Kerrin:  Besides graphic art, I really love photography. A few of my photos have even made it on to posters and shirts on Zazzle! I also really like web design, and I play a bit of bass guitar.

Zazzle: What’s your favorite style to create?

Kerrin:  I mainly create my designs digitally, and the styles can vary, but I love it when I design something witty with just the right dose of type and graphics. I’m a typography nerd. It can take me forever just to find the right font and then make sure it all fits together perfectly.

Zazzle: How many hours do you typically spend working on your Zazzle store?

Kerrin:  I definitely spend a good amount of time making designs and customizing my store, the amount of hours varies. This one time I got an idea for a design and I didn’t stop working on it until it was drawn out, designed, uploaded, and published. I think I went to bed around 3 A.M. that night…

Zazzle: What has been your favorite design you’ve created, and why?

Kerrin: My favorite design has definitely got to be my “I mustache you a question, but I’ll shave it for later” shirt. I think it was the first shirt I ever sold, and then one of the first ones to become popular. I own that design as a shirt and a bag and whenever someone compliments me on one I feel proud to tell them that I made it.

I Mustache you a Question T-Shirt

Zazzle: If Hollywood made a movie about your life, who would you like to see play you?

Kerrin: I think I would choose Zooey Deschanel. She’s just so fun, and cute, and quirky and she reminds me a lot of myself. I even got my hair cut to look like her once…

Zazzle: Being a newer seller on Zazzle, what are you looking forward to the most?

Kerrin: I am definitely looking forward to the day when I’ll be walking down the street and I’ll see someone who’s wearing one of my designs. Then I can run up to them and scream, “Hey you’re wearing my t-shirt!” And then I’d try to explain to them how I made the design and they’ll look at me like I’m crazy.

Zazzle: What got you interested in selling your art on Zazzle?

Kerrin: It’s funny, actually. About a year or two before I started Kerrin Sells T-Shirts I wanted to make a shirt for my friend as a present. I found Zazzle, made an account, created the design, posted it for sale, and then bought it for her and pretty much forget about it. A couple months later I was really surprised when other people started buying the shirt I made! So I decided that I would make a new store and try to sell a couple more designs. Obviously it was a good decision!

Zazzle: What tips can you give someone who is just starting out on Zazzle?

Kerrin: It seems cliché, but don’t give up! For every five designs I make about only one of them is actually successful and the rest don’t sell at all. It can be frustrating sometimes but I keep making designs anyway, mostly just because it’s fun, not just to make a profit.

Thanks Kerrin!

Occupy South Park!

December 19, 2011

South Park remains one of the most relevant barometers for the disgruntled (and those that make fun of the disgruntled).  One of the more recent episodes finds Cartman a member of the 1%, not because he is rich, but because he is well, fat.  Cartman is the 1% in fatness.

Cartman’s weight causes South Park Elementary to falter in their mandated, presidential fitness score. Although the evaluation system in itself is flawed, because of their poor score, the entire school reaps the penalties. See any parallels here? Genius.

Whether you’re a fat and happy Cartman in the 1%, or a disgruntled 99% citizen, be sure to check out all the new Occupy South Park products on Zazzle including T-shirts, Hats, Phone Cases, Mugs, and more!
