Today Might Be Halloween, but Tomorrow is “Day of the Dead”

October 31, 2012

Many might be stuffed to the brim in Halloween treats today, but the festivities continue tomorrow for those celebrating Día de los Muertos or “Day of the Dead.”

A traditional Mexican holiday, Día de los Muertos is celebrated around the world. Individuals take the day to pray for and remember friends and family members who have passed.

We’ve had Day of the Dead products available since Zazzle’s early days. We especially love this Memorial Altar Celebration card. Customize it — insert a photo and add text to the card!

Cerealize: Coming Soon to the Breakfast Table Nearest You?

October 30, 2012

Most people in the tech and design community are familiar with SXSW, but fewer know about a special kind of crazy that happens on the way to the event. Called StartupBus, it’s an annual competition where coders, marketers and designers (mostly strangers) lock themselves in a bus on the way to Austin and are given 72 hours to hack together the next genius business idea. This year, the winner for their out-of-the-box (ahem) disruptive thinking was Cerealize.

Cerealize’s mission is to provide a simple, convenient and personalized breakfast experience for the modern consumer. Cerealize concocted an easy-to-use cereal builder, where consumers can choose from a myriad of options such as organic millet, gluten-free cereal, cornflakes (or even random combinations) and then add extras like goji berries, cashews and…bacon (“Warning: sounds better than it tastes,” describes Cerealize’s website).

But that’s not all – they also offer custom boxes, making the cereal perfect for novelty or gift items for family and friends. Once you’ve created your favorite cereal, they’ll have it delivered to your door.

Giving customers the ability to customize what they want, while also making the entire process fun? At Zazzle, that’s something we can get behind.

The data out there supporting Cerealize’s efforts seem to be on their side. Breakfast cereal is a huge market, and there’s talk that soon mass customized food will take over the entire food industry.

“More people are buying food online and want the ability to pick exactly what they would like,” cereal entrepreneur and Cerealize CEO Chris Bauman told Zazzle. “There’s definitely a lot of interest behind this – we’re giving consumers the ability to really personalize their cereal, inside and out. Mass customization is taking off.”

And so what’s up with the Romney Flakes and Obama O’s on their homepage?

“If you are what you eat,” Bauman explains, “Support the candidate of your choice this election season with some Romney Flakes or Obama O’s.”

Cerealize is not available just yet, but the company’s been flattered by all the interest it’s getting. If you love this idea, check out their website and show them a little love. Perhaps you’ll soon see a Cerealize box on the breakfast table nearest you.

Seller Spotlight: Little Prints

October 25, 2012

An avid artist since the age of 2, Little Prints spent most of her free time as a child drawing and painting. After focusing on art in high school and attending an art and design college in NYC for advertising and packaging design, Little Prints soon found herself interning for a well-known beauty company. It was there that she realized that she enjoyed designing kids’ items after having worked on products like bubble baths, holiday gift boxes and lip balms. When she had her first daughter, Little Prints decided to leave the corporate world and go into designing for babies and children full-time.

It’s all about the cute factor – a special touch that brings my designs to life and gives them personality. This can be a bow on a girl monkey’s head or a sweet, smiley face. I love designing invitations, party supplies, nursery art and I strive for a style that’s modern, colorful and adorable. Finding inspiration is easy. Being a mom to my own children, I keep my eyes open when I shop for them in clothing, bedding and toy stores.

The focus of my business is mostly baby showers, birthday invitations, party décor and nursery décor. My favorite events to design for are children’s birthday parties. For me, conceptualizing a new theme and designing all the matching items is just too much fun. Once an invitation design is done, I usually do a printable party pack with matching thank you cards, stickers, gift tags, banners, cupcake toppers, candy bar wrappers and water bottle labels.

My best-selling holiday designs are my winter and candy penguin designs for baby showers and birthdays. This design is my biggest seller – it usually starts selling in September and orders continue all throughout the winter.

I love knowing that my baby shower designs are being used to decorate a shower or that my nursery art is hanging in a baby’s room. Customers have emailed me photos and it amazes me to see the creative things that they do with my designs.

Designing for babies and children never feels like work for me. There’s a huge market for baby shower and birthday invitations and there are many themes I haven’t gotten to yet that I look forward to designing. Being an illustrator with a background in graphic design, this area allows me to create cute animals and characters in bright, fun colors and have so much fun doing it.

The countdown to the day of costume partying, little monsters door-knocking and candy corn overeating continues. We’re exactly a week away from Halloween, and by now you’ve probably got a good idea of your costume – or if not, you’re scrambling to pull one together.

We talked to a fellow Zazzler to see how her costume was going. She’s decided to fight crime in super-style this Halloween with her adorable dog, Keo, at her side.

She’ll be wearing this awesome Zazzle Superman T-shirt, paired with a snazzy red cape. (If you like her idea and want to do the same this Halloween, be sure to check out the entire selection of Superman T-shirts, iPhone5 cases, water bottles and bags!)

Seller Spotlight: Designalicious

October 18, 2012

There are many ways that artists and designers find inspiration. For Maaike Boot, a designer from the Netherlands, it’s traveling that inspires her. Whether it’s an intricate pattern on the side of a tree or an unusually vibrant hue painted on the corner of a rusted phone booth, Maaike keeps her eyes open to sights, angles and sounds that others often overlook.

If an artist’s work is influenced by perspective, Maaike finds that traveling is a way to shake up solidified mindsets and view the world in new light. It’s by getting lost and immersing herself in novel experiences that she finds ideas for her many creations.

I run a creative studio for graphic design and my focus is surface patterns, textile design and digital illustrations. I’ve always been fascinated with abstract styles, symbols and shapes. Even when I was little, I was always sketching shapes and focusing on patterns.

When you’re traveling, things are always moving and you’re continuously seeing the world in a different context. It can be messy, tiring or even scary, but the key is to remain open to everything and everyone. When I travel, I try to observe and capture snippets of what I hear and what I see, and build that into my work.

(Jaipur, India) I got the idea for this colorful elephant case from my time during the Holi festival in Jaipur, a traditional Hindi religious festival celebrated each year for spring. People wish each other a happy Holi and cover each other with colorful pigment. This case was the result of that trip.

(Pokhara, Nepal) I met an Australian playing in a jazz club, and afterwards I just knew that somehow we’d meet again. He later visited our house in Holland as a couchsurfer, and this was his motto. The word “amazing” in his sentence has another meaning for me. It’s everything that I can imagine for myself in the future and I love the positivity in this message.

(Trinidad, Cuba) Traveling through this country made me realize how rich people can be without having anything. They were some of the most amazing and lovely people I have ever met. This is a reminder for myself that you do not need all that much to be happy.

Zazzle Introduces Panoramic Photo Products!

October 18, 2012

We’ve all been there while taking a picture. You’re on vacation in the tropics and you’re trying to fit the palm tree and the entire double rainbow into the shot, and it…won’t. Or you’re out about town and you can’t get your kid and the complete street mural into an entire frame. Frustration ensues.

Apple had iPhone photographers everywhere overjoyed when they announced the panorama feature on the new iPhone 5. Zazzle has now taken this innovative feature and worked it into our offerings.

We’re excited to announce that you can now snap a beautiful panoramic picture and put it on mugs, posters (small and large) and triptych canvas wall art prints. Zazzle’s the first to offer the ability to create uncropped panoramic photoprint products from your iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S (if you’ve got iOS 6), all in one click from your desktop. This makes us extra-excited. Check out our piece in CNET, as well.

Looking forward to seeing your panoramic creations from our site!

Embrace the Process Butterfly TShirt by Envibrance

I surprised my Husband with [this shirt] in honor of his Mother, whom we lost from post Leukemia complications this past March, and it means SO much to him. -Misty

I ordered the matching T-Shirts for my two favorite gals for Mothers Day this year. They were such a hit they brought tears to the happy mothers’ eyes! I absolutely love the infinite ways you can not only customize the shirts, but that you can edit the pictures too to make them come out better on the shirts. I also love the fact that I could print something on the back. Better yet, the quality of the material was so much better than I expected and I love that the women’s shirt comes in something besides your typical “manly-cut” shirt, something more flattering for a woman’s body! We love using your website and are so glad we found it! -Dominick
