Zazzle Grows Holiday Hiring With Largest Effort Ever

November 15, 2012

Now hiring elves and reindeer for all open positions, please apply within! In anticipation of the holiday shopping season, we are hiring more than 600 people to join the team here in the Bay Area. This year is going to be our largest holiday hiring effort ever, and based on the letters that Santa Claus is already receiving at the North Pole, we will need to staff up to handle the rush.

We’re looking for more than 600 enthusiastic and talented individuals to join the Zazzle team. We have open roles in both our corporate office in Redwood City, California, as well as our manufacturing facility in San Jose, California. By December 2012, we anticipate that more than 1000 people will be working in both locations combined. Unfortunately, Zazzle does not disclose the total number of employees, but we can assure you, this is the largest we’ve ever been! We are looking for customer service representatives, experts in digital press production, skateboard manufacturing, plus a marketing associate, to name just a few open roles.

Our San Jose manufacturing facility is making stuff right in the heart of Silicon Valley. When you order something from Zazzle, each product is made to order, typically within 24 hours. In fact, we’ll be running multiple shifts, for the night owls among you. We’ll need reliable production staff who are enthusiastic team-players. Work can be fun, especially when you’re making sure that the holidays will be happy for everyone.

Zazzle’s San Jose facility customizes hundreds of thousands of products each day – these are Christmas ornaments, not cookies

Zazzle has both temporary and regular positions available including some part-time positions. Potential applicants can also email holidayjobs@zazzle.com. Many hands make light work, and we know that Zazzle’s workshop will be very busy this season.

Seller Spotlight: Lora Severson

November 15, 2012

While some photographers opt for capturing the entire scene, Lora Severson (Lora Severson Photography) prefers the close-up. And for good reason — residing in the countryside of rural Illinois, she’s surrounded by vibrant meadows, colorful flowers and old barns, all of which are detailed subjects for her lens. Known for her original high resolution floral photography, she’s a lover of the rustic and the weathered. We’re glad that she turns her shots into invitations and greeting cards on Zazzle for all of us to enjoy.

I’ve always loved taking pictures, but I wasn’t really serious about it until my kids got older. I poked around some stock photography sites and it really piqued my interest. We have a fantastic arboretum near here that offers certified floral and nature photography classes. I decided to dive right in and it took me about two years at night to get my certification. I knew a lot about photography, but I didn’t know about the technical details, like how you lay out flowers to get the perfect micro-shot.

I especially love designing for rural farm, barn ranch and country weddings — they’re especially popular with Oklahoma, Texas, Tennessee and Illinois residents. I’ll incorporate photos of antique farm equipment, rusted wagon wheels and aged saddles. Many customers love to order whole sets of invites, including matching envelopes, thank you notes and custom postage to create a coordinated set.

There’s a lot of thought and planning that goes into my invitations. I brainstorm how I want to position the space for words, how that fits with the flowers I want to incorporate, and which flower arrangements go well with others. We have all four seasons here, and sometimes when it’s cold and there’s nothing to do, I’ll go outside and look around to see what would make for great close-ups that I can later turn into wedding invites, greeting cards, special occasion announcements and even ornaments. One time I found an old barn that was being torn down, and decided that the barn wood would make for the perfect picture, especially with flowers against it. I find that some of my best photos (and later, products) come from creative serendipity.

Zazzle Is Army Strong!

November 12, 2012

In honor of Veterans Day which celebrates all U.S. military members, we wanted to recognize two Zazzlers who go above and beyond the call of duty every single day. Both are named Andrew, and manage teams of more than a hundred people at our manufacturing facility in San Jose, California.

Also, Zazzle is now offering official U.S. Army merchandise that you can customize and make your own. By federal law, licensing fees paid to the U.S. Army for the use of its trademarks provide support to the Army Trademark Licensing Program, and net licensing revenue is devoted to U.S. Army Morale, Welfare, and Recreation programs. Truly a great program, and we’re proud to be partnered with the U.S. Army for years to come. And you can also count on the fact that our very own Army guys are on the look-out to make sure that your mugs, shirts, postage, keychains, phone cases, stickers and posters are going to be made to order quickly with the highest quality.

We invited both Andrew and Andrew to share a bit about what challenges them every day to grow their skills and expertise in both of their professional pursuits.

Andrew Kim oversees the customization and manufacturing of embroidery products, skateboards, cases, buttons, magnets, and keychains:

I joined Zazzle in 2008 and also serve as a Specialist in the U.S. Army, since enlisting in 2010. It is definitely hard to balance both my Army career and management position at Zazzle without letting my foot off the gas on either side. The Army encourages you to grow your career by leaving it all up to you. It’s a hard balancing act but I like to be challenged. Being in the Reserves means that I’m on call all the time. Travelling, or training exercises, I’m often called away for a few weeks at a time. I’m fortunate that Zazzle is a supportive place to work, but even more fortunate that my wife and son are always supportive, too. I’ll be making a unit t-shirt for myself with our official crest now that we’ve got an Army store at Zazzle.

Andrew Lumidao runs the digital press finishing which includes holiday cards, stationery, and custom postage:

There were only 20 of us in manufacturing when I first joined Zazzle in 2004. We’ve definitely grown a lot since then. I joined the U.S. Army in 2005, where I’m still in the Reserves as a Specialist. It’s definitely a challenge to juggle my role at Zazzle with my military career, but I manage to get by. I was deployed in Iraq from 2007-8 for one year. It was an interesting experience to say the least, as we were in the thick of things with no showers and no bathrooms in a highly targeted area. In the long-run, I aim to grow my career at Zazzle, and also raise my first child who is expected to arrive in just a few months. Since my unit will be deployed again soon, I plan to send some care packages to them because I know how much it meant to me when I received care packages from my colleagues at Zazzle while I was away.

On Veterans Day, we wanted to thank all of the brave and hard-working members of the U.S. military for their service, including those members of the Zazzle family who currently serve. Thank you!

In addition, iPhone 5 wallets are also available now on Zazzle. It’s sturdy and soft all at the same time. There are two pockets for cards and cash, with genuine mahogany leather that feels great in your hands. Sage waxed duck canvas is also used in addition to the cotton interior.

Seller Spotlight: TDSWhite

November 8, 2012

Matthew and Trevor are the dynamic duo behind one of Zazzle’s most popular stores, TDSWhite. Specializing in awesome holiday products and all things classic weddings, they’ve been selling their creations on Zazzle since its early days. Trevor has a background in photography and design, and Matthew has the writing chops, which is put to good use copywriting descriptions for their products.

If we had to describe our style, we’d say it’s timeless, classic and long-lasting. When we’re focusing on designing Zazzle custom postage or wedding products, we’ll make sure to include a beautiful white gown, flowers that don’t go out of fashion (like roses) or popular colors for the season.

We’re especially proud of our Zazzle custom postage for the holidays, which incorporate winter scenes and snowflake patterns. They’re a hit with customers. As for weddings, our background in floral photography helped us design successful products. We started out with Zazzle custom postage, and as more products were added, like invitations or towels, we adapted our designs to fit the products.

One of our biggest pieces of advice when designing for weddings is to pay close attention to color in your products. We try to keep our designs timeless, but we also pay attention to popular colors for each season. The color selection for wedding products in the fall and winter is different than spring and summer. There’s more earth tones, bright oranges and reds. As you go into winter, cool colors like blues, greys, bright red and white are popular all the way through the holiday season.

As if creating and designing on Zazzle isn’t enough to keep Matthew and Trevor busy, Matthew is also a screenwriter & novelist. Trevor designs all of his book covers. Check out their work at Matthew’s website: http://www.MatthewGrantOnline.com

It’s Election Day

November 6, 2012

Votes are being cast today at the polls for this 2012 election (if you still haven’t voted, go out and vote!), and everyone’s eagerly awaiting each state’s results.

It’s been a hard-fought battle on both sides. No matter what your stance, everyone can agree that if you’ve already cast your ballot, the election is mostly out of your hands at this point.

While you’re waiting for the big outcome, check out our store with Creative Allies that’s recently launched. Creative Allies is a design contest engine and social media campaign platform for crowdsourcing designs. This year, Zazzle partnered with Creative Allies to reach out to their artistic community and gather submissions reflecting people’s opinions around the election. It’s no surprise that with an anxious election season and record-low public approval ratings, participants were feeling some political angst.

We received over a hundred submissions (even some internationally) featuring a wide range of designs and political positions, and we’ve showcased some of the best here. These amazing designs from submissions can be ordered on our election merchandise, such as posters, t-shirts, stickers, cases and mugs.

Also, check out all of the entries for our contest on Creative Allies’ main site.
