Zazzle Featured Designer Interview with Misty Chatterjee

Misty Chatterjee, also known as Zazzler Mistyqe, talks with us about her whimsical style, her favorite invitations, and how a first birthday party started her career with Zazzle.

Zazzle: Tell us about yourself! Where are you from, where do you live?

Misty: I’m originally from India, and grew up in Mumbai. I moved to the United States about 12 years ago and I currently live in Los Angeles, California.

Zazzle: What is your background in art and design?

Misty: I’ve always liked art, ever since I was a kid. Growing up, I doodled on everything – including my homework! However, I did not pursue it very seriously. I thought of it more as a hobby until I discovered the wide scope of art and all the exciting things I could do with it.

I never knew that graphic design existed until I came across it on my own. I realized that it was something that I could consider as a successful career. That was when I decided that I wanted to learn art formally and went to art school in Denver, Colorado to get my degree.

Zazzle: How did you get started on Zazzle?

Misty: I got into Zazzle after I had my first baby. I was looking to make my own invitations for his first birthday, because it was such a big deal for me. I needed a smaller number of invitations and I wanted my own design to be printed on it. I wanted it to be something that I had created myself for my baby. I did some research and came upon Zazzle, and it was unbelievable! It was exactly what I was looking for. So my first ever Zazzle design was that pirate-themed birthday invitation for my child.

After that I actually got a Today’s Best Award on that design! When some of those designs then sold, I thought, “Wow, someone else likes my design enough to buy it?” That was when I really started to look into Zazzle seriously and started creating other products.

Zazzle: What’s your design and style inspiration? How would you describe your designs?

Misty: I would describe my style as “modern but whimsical”. For inspiration, I look at current trends – such as with the holidays coming up – but I always try to make things that are whimsical and fun. I’m not a very serious person, so there is always that element of fun and cuteness in my designs. Simple, minimal designs that use negative space are my favorite.

Zazzle: What’s your favorite Zazzle product to design?

Misty: I love invitations! They are definitely my favorite. I love making everything to match: the matching RSVP, Thank You cards, stickers, stamps – the whole set! There’s no limit to them. There are so many events, holidays, and personal special occasions that people want invitations for that the sky is the limit.

Zazzle: We love your invitations, too! With the holidays coming up, do you have a favorite holiday design in your store?

Misty: It’s hard to pick just one! Since most holiday designs are the typical holiday colors of red and green, I wanted to try something different. I thought, “Why not try pink or purple?” They’re not conventional holiday colors, but I thought people might like something that would really stand out. So far, they’ve sold well and people seem to really love how different they are.

Zazzle: Do you have any advice to share for designers who are just starting out on Zazzle?

Misty: When you’re starting out, stick to your strengths. It’s good to look at current trends, but try out the trends that match up with your style and talents. You don’t have to be good at absolutely everything, just make sure that the designs you are making are quality designs.
