Zazzle Featured Designer Interview with Dina

December 20, 2013

Today we had a chat with an amazing 8-year-old, Dina, who just created her first Zazzle store: DinasDesigns.  We talked to Dina about her artwork, her allowance, and her love of animals.

Zazzle: How did you get started designing with Zazzle?

Dina: I saw SPCA ads on TV and they were talking about how, if you gave them some money, they could save the lives of cats and dogs. At first, I wanted to give my allowance money, but it wasn’t enough. Then, one time at dinner, my Dad was talking about how, when he was a kid, he made greeting cards with his sister to sell. It gave me the idea to do that. My mom suggested to put my artwork on Zazzle. My goal was to raise $50 and give it to an animal shelter, and I just got to $50!

dinas_kitty_carddinas_dolphin_notecard

Zazzle: Pandas, giraffes, frogs, cats, dolphins – your store is like a zoo!  What inspires you? How do you get ideas for your art?

Dina: It’s usually how I’m feeling at the time. Sometimes I’m feeling like something really bright and yellow. Sometimes I’m sad and tired and I paint in blue shades. My feelings really inspire me. Most of the drawings have a happy feeling to them; a couple, excited. I usually have a lot of crazy ideas. I try not to get too crazy, but sometimes I can’t help it! My favorite thing to draw is something that moves, like an animal.

dinas_bumble_bee_double_image_jumbo_size_specialty_mugbird_stamps

Zazzle: Which piece of art is your favorite?

Dina: Oooo. Hard one. I think my alien is my favorite. My teacher let me put a lot of imagination into that one with eyelashes and a belly button, changing colors, painting her toenails … it was just really fun to make and turned out super-cool at the end.

dinas_girl_alien_notebook

Zazzle: What else do you like to do besides art?

Dina: I love to read. My favorite book so far might be “A Wrinkle in Time”, and I also like the Pandora series. My very, very, very favorite is the Narnia series. It has a lot of imagination, and I always like happy endings. Reading is my favorite thing because I can go into other peoples’ imaginations.

unicorn_grocery_tote_canvas_bag

Zazzle: What is your favorite class at school?

Dina: I like STEM Lab because I get to experiment. It’s fun to experiment and guess what’s going to happen, just like I do with books. I like to work with partners. Science is really fun.

dinas_giraffe_13_laptop_sleeve_macbook_sleeve

Zazzle: What are your favorite animals? Do you have any pets?

Dina: My favorite animals are sea turtles because they’re so nice. Some people kill them to make jewelry or to eat, and I want to help save them.

dinas_turtle_stamp
I have a pet kitty named Nala. She’s named after a character from The Lion King. She LOVES to pounce. She’s a tuxedo cat, half Maine Coon and half American Short Hair. She’s really playful, especially in the morning when I’m sleepy and tired. She’s a great pet!

Holiday gift series: monogrammed with a kiss

December 17, 2013

Did you know?

Monograms have existed since about 350 BCE.

They first appeared on coins in Greece and Rome.

Artisans in the Middle Ages used monograms to sign their work.

Victorians invented the personal, status-symbol monogram.

We’ve taken it to the next level with our dedicated Monogram Shop.

You can go all out this holiday season, starting with this Pink-Blue Chevron Lamp that’ll make any room pop in a personal, stylin’ way:

The Chevron Chic Mug is pale peach and green for a dignified, individualized cup of morning brew:

DIY Holiday Card Series: Holiday Card Wreath

December 13, 2013

DIY Holiday Card Wreath #zazzle #DIY

Today’s DIY post is also being featured on I Heart Nap Time which is an amazing site with crafty ideas for you to create while baby is napping!  Thanks Jamielyn for the collaboration!

We’ve all been there – stacks of holiday cards are piled high on the countertop, or worse, taped haphazardly to a wall in an effort to contain the chaos. The good ole’ fallback of sticking them to the fridge just isn’t working, plus you’ve got 1 too many friends and not enough magnets. Well, with just a few supplies and some quick, easy steps, you can create a one of a kind card display.

Here’s what you’ll need!

DIY Holiday Card Wreath #zazzle #DIY

Supplies:

  • Wide holiday ribbon for hanging, about 6 ft
  • Solid foam craft wreath (we found ours in the garden section of our local big box craft store)
  • Small Straight Pins
  • Holiday Cards

Step 1: Loop the ribbon around one edge of the wreath making sure that the ends of the ribbon meet evenly. This will be what the wreath hangs from, so measure the amount of ribbon you’ll need to secure it to your hook or door. Secure the ribbon to the foam wreath with 2 pins, 1 on each side.

Step 2: Lay out the cards in the order that you think will be most visually appealing and start pinning. Pin each card to the wreath using the 1-2 straight pins.

Step 3: Continue pinning cards to the foam frame until you’ve covered the entire wreath. If any cards seem loose, just add an extra pin.

When you’ve finished, hang your wreath in a space that could use a touch of holiday!

Zazzle Featured Designer Interview with Heather Kerr

December 13, 2013

Heather Kerr, of Zazzle store dreamingmindcards, talks with us about her color inspirations, and how Zazzle helped her become self-employed while learning more design skills on the way.

Zazzle: Tell us about yourself! Where are you from, where do you live?

Heather: I’m from Ontario, Canada, where I’ve lived my whole life. I live with my wonderful husband who works together with me on our Zazzle store, which has been great for both of us.

teal_blue_geometric_pattern_decorative_pillow

Zazzle: What is your background in art and design?

Heather: I’m a self-taught artist. I haven’t had formal training but I’ve always loved all kinds of art. It’s been a passion of mine from the time I could hold a pencil!

blue_photo_vow_renewal_ceremony_invitation_cardWe started our store with paintings in 2007, and that’s actually how I learned to use Photoshop and similar tools. I had to learn how to take photos of my paintings and make them presentable to post online on Zazzle products. I stumbled into the graphic design side of things by learning how to edit my paintings, add text or other graphic elements, and I really fell in love with it.

blue_and_white_floral_samsung_galaxy_s_case

Zazzle: How did you get started with Zazzle?

Heather: My husband and I were both working jobs that paid the bills but weren’t what we wanted to be doing. We were looking for a line of work that would be more flexible for the both of us. So, we looked online for something that we could do from home and something that would work with what I always wanted to do anyway: art. That’s how we came across Zazzle.

i_pad_lemon_gray_floral_pattern_ipad_cover

We opened our main store in 2010 that started with a few simple greeting cards, and expanded into weddings. It all grew from there with all of the different categories available on Zazzle. There’s been a lot of trial and error but we’ve had a lot of fun with it. It’s been successful, and we’re really pleased with it.

retro_business_from_group_birthday_card

coral_blue_chevron_rehearsal_dinner_party_invitation

Zazzle: Where do you find your inspiration?

Heather: Inspiration can come from almost anywhere. We joke now that both my husband and I can recognize patterns from all over: on television, in commercials or magazines – anywhere.

i_phone_5_mint_chevron_ombre_custom_name_iphone_case

For me I usually begin with a really inspiring color combination, that’s what will start a design. I especially love bright colors, but even if they’re not bright the colors can say something strongly about what the product is. I like interesting colors, something unexpected. Most of my products start with a color I love so much that I just have to make a product with it.

90th_birthday_party_invitations_blue_coral_flowers

Also, there’s so much talent on Zazzle that it really inspires you to become better as a designer. You’re surrounded by such talented people that you want to bring your best.

cream_floral_bridal_luncheon_invitation_cards

Zazzle: What are your favorite Zazzle products to design?

Heather: There’s so much you can do with card and invitation products. There are so many different types of events you might need an invitation for. From there, you can create so many other different types of products, to make nearly everything matching for the event. People always want coordinating sets for their events. You can start with the basic  invitation and build the set from there.

chalkboard_merry_bright_custom_name_stamps

merry_and_bright_christmas_photo_card_chalkboard

There are so many great new products on Zazzle, too. My latest obsession is the wrapping paper, I love it! We’re also trying out new areas by expanding more into home décor items and phone cases. The lamps are another new product I really like.

holiday_photo_red_stripes_wrapping_paper

dark_blue_custom_family_photo_lamp

Zazzle: What advice do you have for anyone wanting to start their own Zazzle store?

Heather: Patience. At the beginning it can be a lot to learn and a lot to take in. People can underestimate how much time it can take for your products to get out there. Give it time! Pay attention to all of the great advice that’s already out there. There are so many great tutorials, forums posts and other information that you can take advantage of to learn from others who have already done it. The most beneficial thing for me has been learning from others who have already been using Zazzle.

Holiday Gift Series: Gifts for the Bookworm

December 12, 2013

Our Holiday Gift Series this year has come to an end, and last but not at all least, we name our top picks for the book lovers. One exciting thing about Christmas is that, for a few hours, you get to see the bookworm! They emerge from behind the pages, or the screen, and make nice for a little while before heading back. We’ll take it.

And one thing about book lovers is, the movie that’s adapted from a book is probably not a positive. Odds are, they’ll side with the book. So give them a rallying cry with a shirt that says, read it first — the “Don’t Judge a Book by its Movie” t-shirt:

dont_judge_a_book_by_its_movie_t_shirt

http://www.zazzle.com/dont_judge_a_book_by_its_movie_t_shirt-235285281406575020

If they’re a reader who likes tablets, as opposed to seeing them as doomsday, they’ll love the idea of wrapping one up in … books. For the iPad Mini owner, the Bookshelf Background Case is a lovable ode to library shelves (remember those?), which will make your bookworm calm and glad wherever they go:

http://www.zazzle.com/bookshelf_background_case_for_the_ipad_mini-256884188436178101

And for the curling up at home, with a mug of tea on the side table during a long, luxurious read, the Reading Rainbow is the perfect “case” for the chamomile, Earl Grey or fresh mint. As the mug itself says, “You don’t have to take my word for it”:

That’s all she wrote, folks. Happy Holidays, happy shopping and happy time together!

Holiday Gift Series: Gifts for the World Traveler

December 11, 2013

Fortunately, travel lovers are a cinch to shop for!  If your travel buddy is focused on business class luxury, or enjoys a relaxing cruise, or even a quick puddle-jump to nearby we’ve got the perfect gift.

Next up in our Holiday Gift Series, we turn our attention to them. For the times when they’re on land, nothing’s handier than a purse to put your things in — a small suitcase, if you will. The Vintage Eiffel Tower Wristlet/Clutch is one they can sport in any country, on any day, with glee:

vintage_paris_eiffel_tower_wristlet_clutch

http://www.zazzle.com/vintage_paris_eiffel_tower_wristlet_clutch-223440468299812331

For their actual luggage (which might get even more use than a purse), they’re going to need a tag to keep it safe. They might barely be at the home whose address is on the tag, but that’s another matter. We present the Travel the World Inspiration Quote Luggage Tag:

fun_travel_the_world_inspiration_quote_luggage_tag

http://www.zazzle.com/fun_travel_the_world_inspiration_quote_luggage_tag-256404215275526960

And chances are, if they jetset, they use a tablet. How else do you keep track of emails, movies, music, books when you’re often on the go? For the traveler with an iPad Mini, the Vintage Travel Collage Case will keep them and their iPad happy and adorned with the joy of adventure:

vintage_travel_collage_ipad_mini_case

Finally, we wrap up our series with favorite gifts for the bookworm. Bon voyage!
