Is my product hot or not?

June 4, 2007

Many of you have noticed that we’ve put increased emphasis on ratings in the new search interface. Why? Well, we want the community to help us find and filter the best products from the zazzillions of products in the marketplace. Rating is just one extra piece of data that is used by the What’s Hot algorithm to determine what products to feature. It also means that we’re getting lots of accurate ratings from as many people as possible. Think of it as crowd-sourced merchandising!

Now you can easily rate a product from right inside a search/browse results page. Just move your mouse over the stars and they’ll turn yellow. Click to submit your rating.

You can also click the “rate it” link next to the stars.

This brings up an inline window that allows you to rate tons of products very quickly. After you rate one product, the next product from the results page will be shown automatically.

The old ratings system was pretty susceptible to spam because we didn’t require login and users could just come back and rate the same product over and over again. Login is now required to rate products and you won’t be allowed to rate a product multiple times.

I want to encourage everyone to continue creating great products and rate the stuff you like best. You can even rate down products that you think are showing up too high in the marketplace with a 1 or 2 star vote. It’s really a group effort to make sure the marketplace is featuring the best products.

Happy rating!

Searching on Zazzle Just Got a Whole Lot Better

May 15, 2007

Just about a month ago we released a new version of search to make the marketplace easier to browse, much more dynamic and even more community powered. With all new features, it’s sometimes hard to predict how users will like it and how they’ll use it, so we decided to test the new search out in beta mode. We’re really glad we did that because we got great feedback from the community and were even able to watch people use it which resulted in new ideas.

In summary, most users loved the new search so much that we’ve decided to switch the site over completely. Starting from today, beta search is not so beta anymore.

Based on the feedback, we’ve added a couple of tweaks that we thought would make the experience better:

1. Share It / Favorite It – You can easily share products through IM or email and add products to your Favorites on every search result page. Pretty cool huh?

Zazzle Share It

2. Shortcuts – One day we noticed in our search logs that a lot of people were searching for “Tinkerbell” but we didn’t do a great job of surfacing all our great Disney content. To solve the problem, we came up with the idea of introducing search shortcuts for certain keywords like Tinkerbell, Tweety Bird, and even where is my order?. There’s a bunch more shortcuts on the site. Maybe you can type in random search terms and try to find them all if you’re bored at work!

3. Awards - Did you know that we give out a lot of awards everyday to the best products? For example, there’s Today’s Best which is chosen by our editors every morning. Every day, we award 10 products with the most views that day per product type. We’ve integrated this right into the search results – now you can check out all the past winners by going to the awards tab and clicking on the calendar to view day by day results. Congrats to all the winners!

PS – Keep watching for more updates
. Coming up next there is going to be a new easier way to rate your favorite products.

Shhhhh… A Little Bird Is Telling You To Check Out Beta Search = )

April 6, 2007

The Quick Summary

We’ve been working hard the last couple of weeks to make the marketplace easier to browse, much more dynamic and even more community-powered. Pretty exciting huh?! What are you waiting for? Go check out the new beta search and let us know what you think.

The Long Winded Version That Took Forever To Write

Weeks ago, I realized that summer was approaching and that I needed some new t-shirts to rock, so I jumped onto my computer and searched on Zazzle. I started off by searching for “cool t-shirts.” Nothing that great on the first page. No worries, let’s try the second page. Some interesting stuff but still nothing I wanted to buy. How about changing the search result from showing the newest to the most popular instead? Now we’re talking. The designs were all pretty good but the shirts were ones that would have been cool a year ago, not now. At this point I thought to myself, “Wow our marketplace is pretty hard to browse. If I think it’s difficult to find things, I can’t imagine what it’s like for our users. It’s time to improve this thing.”

So the Zazzle team went back, read back through thousands of feedback emails we’ve received from users and created a list of things we thought really needed improvement:

  • It’s too hard to quickly browse the marketplace to find and/or discover interesting products.
  • The popularity of a product isn’t actually a measure of its “hotness” or momentum, which made the marketplace too static. Once a product becomes popular it tends to stay popular because of the positive feedback loop that’s created. More popular means more people see it… which means more people buy it… which means it gets even more popular. But who wants to see the same products every single day?! T-shirt designs, mugs, and posters are just like books and music – they start small, gain popularity, hit a peak and then are replaced by more topical content as interest wanes. The Zazzle marketplace needs to capture this dynamism.
  • We want the community to participate more in order to help determine what the hottest products are through such metrics as ratings, adding to favorites, pageviews, comments and purchases… because there’s no way that we at Zazzle could more accurately predict what people want!
  • The images are too small.
  • Page load time is too slow.
  • Ouch, our SEO is pretty bad.

After several weeks of hard work we think we have something that is ready for our community to start playing around with and for us to learn from. Here’s a summary of what we’ve done so far and what we’re working on:

  • Added navigation to the left of the page to make it easier to filter by products and categories. We’re going to be adding more filters like Narrow by Price, Narrow by Color, and Narrow by Contributor.
  • Added a new way to view what’s popular by time period like Today, This Week, This Month, and All Time. We’re investigating even more ways to sort, such as Most Favorited, Most Discussed, Most Viewed, Best Sellers, Award Winners, etc.
  • Some of our best-n-brightest ZCORE engineers have implemented the first phase of a new popularity algorithm that takes into account community participation and the momentum of product popularity. We can’t disclose much about our secret sauce but we can tell you that the ranking is a function of many metrics and parameters… some of the more significant ones include recent views, ratings, comments, favorites, and sales.
  • Increased the size of the preview images from 125×125 to 220×220 and changed them to “realviews” (where a design is displayed on the actual product) instead of design views. That’s at least 310% more preview goodness!
  • Improved the load time of our pages. You may even see more speed improvements once we install our aftermarket supercharger and slap on our “Powered by Caffeine” bumper sticker.
  • Better SEO which means more people googling out there will find your products on Zazzle.

A bunch of us at Zazzle have been playing around with beta search for a few days and love the new experience because:

  • It’s much easier to find and discover fresh and topical products.
  • Seeing the marketplace rankings change not just daily – but every single minute – based on community action… is just cool!
  • It’s more fun to participate when you know that your actions can positively affect the marketplace experience for all.
    • See a product you love? Vote it up, add it to your favorites, share it with friends, add a comment or even buy it (which btw is the biggest indicator that you think the product is hot).
    • See a product that is the antithesis of hot? Give it no love, vote it down or don’t click on it. Just don’t leave nasty comments for the contributor. That’s not cool and they’ll probably get deleted anyway.
    • We take into account what everyone does on the site, actively remove the spam and mix in some fancy algorithms to calculate what the community thinks is popular.
  • We think a lot more people will be visiting Zazzle on a daily basis which means more sales for all!

So, why the beta? Well, this is a pretty significant change to Zazzle and we always want to hear your feedback before making any major changes – our community is very important to us. Let us know what you think!

Buying Gifts for Your Friends and Family Now Even Easier

March 22, 2007

I’ve always thought of Zazzle as a great place to buy gifts. With all the user generated products in our marketplace (more being added every single second by awesome designers from around the world!) you’re sure to find something that will even delight those hard-to-shop-for type of people like my dad who pretty much returns everything I buy for him. And if you can’t find something in the marketplace, why not use our design tools and create something from scratch instead?

Ahhh, so many more gift giving possibilities than ever before – don’t you just love the magic of The Long Tail and the democratization of the tools of production. :)

Since so many people use Zazzle to buy gifts for others, we’re always looking for ways to improve the gift giving experience. Now when you check “My cart contains a gift item” during checkout, we’ll include a gift packing sheet in the box. You’ll definitely earn some brownie points with your friends and family since they’ll know you just bought them a one-of-a-kind product that you helped make.

Here’s a preview of the packing sheet that we’re going to include in every gift shipment. It’s going to be in color too!

Today is Pi Day. March 14th… 3/14… 3.14… get it?

March 14, 2007

We’re a little on the geeky side here at Zazzle and couldn’t help but notice that today is a special day for one of our favorite mathematical constants in the world – Pi!

Some interesting facts about Pi that I found on Wikipedia:

  • The symbol for Pi is the first letter of the Greek word that means “circumference”
  • Pi has been calculated to over 1 trillion digits with supercomputers and no pattern has yet been discovered
  • The current world record for digits of Pi memorized is 100,000 decimal places which was set on October 3, 2006 by Akira Haraguchi. It took him 16 hours to finish!

The internal Zazzle record for digits of Pi memorized is 32 decimal places by one of our head backend engineers Jason Li. Not too shabby even though he says his feat is way too lame compared to what Akira memorized.

Think you can do better than Jason? Leave a comment telling us how many digits you can do. It’ll be even better if you can link to a video of you performing your amazing feat. As an added incentive, we’ll send the winner a Pi inspired product from Zazzle like the ones below:
