Today we’re chatting with one of our talented Designers from the UK, Sian Summerhayes, about her unique approach to graphic design and home decor.
Tell us a bit about you!
Hello! I am a freelance illustrator and artist, who lives and works in the Stroud area of the Cotswolds. I produce illustrations and surface pattern designs for stationery products and home accessories as well as producing my own art prints. I like being cosy at home among pretty things or making something random for our home, or dabbling with crafts as well as spending time in the great outdoors with my husband and our dog Sylvie!
What’s your background in art and design? Did you go to Art College?
I have previously worked in Fine Art Publishing and in the Contemporary Arts, and before that studying History of Art and Graphic Design – I seem to have come round to my personal design work in a bit of a backward and roundabout way. Learning Graphic Design on my computer first before returning to paint and paper after feeling the need to get back to basics, now my style functions as a kind of fusion of the two disciplines.
Where do you get your inspiration? We love your flowery, girly prints.
I am massively inspired by the ‘home’ and am a real home-bird! The feel of a personal and homely place can be so uplifting and warming, and my environment is really important to me, which is why I love working on home accessories. Living in the beautiful Cotswolds countryside is also a constant source of inspiration, the beauty of this area really is so outstanding and this has trickled in to my work through depictions of florals, foliage, animals and birds among nature. My work is very pattern-led, and I feel this adds a pretty, yet contemporary look to my designs. I like my work to feel fresh and modern but to still sit well in a country cottage environment.
What’s your favourite design in your Zazzle store? Tell us a bit about it!
I am obsessed with cushions and blankets and you can’t go far in my house without either in reach. So I have really enjoyed designing for these product areas particularly. I think my favourite product is my ‘Light Coral Floral Pattern Cushion’. I also love the chicken mugs and kitchen towels, I just feel they really sum up my style and have a charm that will cheer up people’s homes!
What Zazzle product do you prefer to add designs to?
So many of the Zazzle products are fun to work on – I feel I have only just got started! The cloth napkins, plates and cushions all lend very well to pattern designs but the little notebooks are also very sweet, a really usable product.
