Ring in Spring with a Celestial Trifecta

By • 7 years ago with no replies yet

Call it Freaky Friday—today, on the official first day of Spring, the celestial world will experience a rare occurrence with three astronomical events coinciding: the vernal equinox, a supermoon and a total solar eclipse.

Turn Around, Bright Eyes

Unless you happened to be in the Faroe Islands super early this morning, you already missed today’s first celestial phenomenon. A total solar eclipse was visible from this archipelago located halfway between Iceland and Norway. In case you need a refresher, a total solar eclipse happens when the Earth, sun and moon line up in a way that causes the moon to totally block the sun. While a slew of European cities could see a partial eclipse, only those in the Faroe Islands were lucky enough to see the rare total eclipse.

Zazzle tip: Mark your calendars because on August 21, 2017, Americans will be treated to their first total eclipse since 1979.

It’s a Bird … It’s a Plane … It’s a … Supermoon?

A supermoon takes place when a full or new moon (new moon in today’s case) is closer to the Earth than usual during its orbit, which makes it look much bigger and brighter than usual. Unfortunately, only those lucky enough to catch this morning’s eclipse will be getting a glimpse of today’s supermoon, but that doesn’t make it any less super in our eyes.

Spring Has Sprung!

And finally, the one phenomenon we’ll all get to experience and celebrate: the vernal equinox. It’s just a fancy name for Spring, ya’ll, and it happens every year around March 20, when the sun crosses directly over the equator in the Northern Hemisphere. Set your alarm because at 6:45 p.m. ET today, we can kiss Old Man Winter buh-bye. Unless you live in certain areas of the Northeast—then you’ll be getting up to 6 inches of snow today. But with a little online shopping, you can bring Spring to you.
