Tell us about you!
I’m Terry Katz and I live in San Diego, CA. I’m married to Pete Katz and we have one daughter, Zoe. Zoe is quite talented and has even sold a pilot to Disney.
I have an identical twin sister, Peggy, and she also has an amazing shop on Zazzle called PJ Design. Although we look alike, our style in design is completely different! I love architecture and my husband and I have built modern and organic buildings in southern California. My store name McBooBoo’s is a mash-up of my cat “Boo Boo” and my maiden name “McHenry”. My work can be seen in stores, magazines and on TV, like the Today Show!
What is your background in art/design? What got you started creating?
I have been an artist my entire life; I have my degree in art and photography. I had my weird photos in a few permanent collections in several museums in the ’90s and that was fun, but I never really made a lot of money. I then worked for interior designers doing decorative painting and faux finishing that was popular at the time in the early part of 2000.
I was looking for something else to do that would keep me at home more, so I created stock photography and vectors that you can still purchase today. Then, I found Zazzle and started designing invitations and was thrilled with the results! I worked all day, every day to get my portfolio up to a level that the earnings came in every day. Plus Zazzle is FUN! I can create so many different products for customers and things for myself, like iPhone cases, posters, wrapping paper, etc.
You have so many fun invitation themes – where do you find inspiration for your designs?
Thanks! I try to create “out of the box” designs with a funky look. I follow trends, look at design magazines and research everything. I love a retro look and bold colors and fonts. I love to draw my illustrations with Adobe Illustrator.
What are your favorite product types to design on Zazzle? Can you share some of your favorite or best-selling designs from your store?
My favorite products are invitations and you’ll find many of them on my shop “McBooboo’s”. My favorite designs are usually my most recent illustrations. Here is one of my more recent Ugly Christmas Sweater Invitations; I also like this Big Adventure Baby Shower Invitation because it has a rustic folk art feel that’s popular today:
Do you have any advice for other Zazzle Designers?
Yes, you must work on your store as much as possible, all day, every day…I’m not kidding!!
