Our resident SEO expert and Geek Extraordinaire, Jamar, is back with another fun post as we get excited for the upcoming premiere of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
We should all hope to look as fantastic as Wonder Woman does at 74.
Now, Jamar, you might intone, that isn’t a very healthy or sensitive way to speak about Wonder Woman. You’re right, dear reader, it wouldn’t be if the comment was meant as a way to speak about her looks. It wasn’t. The mythology of Wonder Woman, her strength, and the costuming that Snyder and the rest of the movie crew have picked to use for the upcoming movie make her just as relevant today as she was when she debuted in 1942. Unlike a lot of female characters in comic books and their television and movie adaptations, she isn’t eye candy, nor is she a damsel in distress.
She is a warrior, fierce and formidable.
But let’s start at the beginning for anyone not familiar with the Amazonian and her origins.
Who is Wonder Woman?
Like most superheroes, Wonder Woman has had many origin stories attached to her as different writers and illustrators took over the comic and her characterization. We’ll boil it down to the elements that have stayed as constant as possible through her many iterations.
Princess Diana of Themyscira is the daughter of Hippolyta, queen of the Amazons. Diana was fashioned out of a hunk of clay and given life and powers by the Gods of Olympus. After being trained in the ways of the Amazons, Diana is sent out to the wider world to be an ambassador for Themyscira and to use her powers to help bring peace.
Man, aren’t comic books fun?!?
Wonder Woman is also one of the original members of the Justice League, along with Superman, the Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, Batman, and Aquaman (who really shouldn’t be a superhero, but that is an argument for another day).
What Powers Does Wonder Woman Possess?
When she was first created Wonder Woman’s strength was on par with Superman’s. Talk about a powerhouse!! She also had telepathy, the ability to run abnormally fast, accelerated healing, supreme military intelligence, enhanced senses, and an ability to resist manipulation through magical powers. Wonder Woman was also gifted with magic bracelets which augmented her strength and were also used to deflect bullets, a lasso that forced anyone caught in its embrace to tell the truth, a razor sharp tiara that could be thrown like a boomerang, and an invisible jet.
While the strength has stayed virtually the same, there have been some changes over the years. The jet is gone, and the tiara isn’t used as much for a weapon. Wonder Woman now has a sword forged by the god Hephaestus as well as a shield. Her bracelets still allow her to deflect bullets, and her lasso still forces people to tell the truth (how many of us would love to have that lasso?!?).
How Will Wonder Woman be Portrayed in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice?
Would you still love me if I told you I don’t know?
Zach Snyder and the rest of the Batman v Superman team have been really tight-lipped about much of the plot, especially as it pertains to how Wonder Woman will be incorporated. We have gotten a few glimpses of her in the trailers that have been released, one of which is especially promising to fans of the strong female role model she is in the comics. In the second official trailer she stands with Bruce Wayne at what appears to be a fancy party, and he says to her, “I’ve known a few women like you.” Her reply?
“Oh, I don’t think you’ve ever known a woman like me.”
The next cut shows Wonder Woman, resplendent in her costume, leaping toward danger.
Can I just throw money at this movie already?!?
Not only are we getting a continuation of the Superman story told in Man of Steel, but we are also seeing an older Batman challenging the mythology being built around Superman. And the icing on the comic book cake? A bold Wonder Woman who doesn’t need to be saved by anyone, wielding her sword and shield and rushing toward the action.
That is a strength I hope to have in my own life one day.
