Today’s Featured Designer is Julie Ehrmantraut of Zazzle store Julie Erin Designs. Check out our interview below to learn more about her journey as an artist and the inspiration behind her fun designs.
Tell us about yourself!
I am an artist and designer from Vancouver, Canada. Besides art and design I love to get outside and enjoy the beautiful nature that surrounds me here in British
Columbia. When I’m not creating, I often go bicycling, hiking, or just lounge on the beach with my boyfriend.
Tell us about the space where you do your work.
My work space is the space where I feel the most comfortable, on the couch in my living room! I often create my designs in a sketchbook and use my computer to edit them, so it doesn’t take up too much space. When I make paintings I have an easel set up in a spare bedroom.
What is your background in art/design? What got you started creating?
I’ve been creating art since I was 5 years old. I’ve always felt compelled to create things with my hands and eventually pursued a University Arts degree from which I recently graduated.
Where do you find inspiration for your designs?
I find inspiration mainly from nature, fashion/trends, and other artists.
When do you feel your most creative? Your least?
Creativity comes to me randomly, usually when I am busy doing something else! After going on, what I like to call, an “art binge” I often go through a slump where I don’t feel inspired to make any new designs. This works out though so I can focus on editing and uploading my designs to Zazzle!
What are your favorite products to design on Zazzle?
I love seeing my designs on all of Zazzle’s interesting and unique products. I especially like designing home decor items like throw pillows, and apparel like the new women’s tank tops because they are something I would totally wear myself (and do).
If you could wish for one new product on Zazzle, what would it be and why?
If I could wish for one new product from Zazzle, it would be an all-over print scarf. I think it would be super fun to see my designs on that.
What was the very first Zazzle product that you sold?
The very first product I sold was a shirt to one of my friends. It was totally unexpected though, I shared my store on Facebook and she bought a shirt just like that! I was so grateful. The first item I sold to a non-friend was actually a photo print that went all the way to France! That felt really great, and compelled me to keep adding new products to my store.
What are your favorite product types to design on Zazzle?
I really enjoy designing apparel and home decor items.
Do you have any advice for new Zazzle Designers?
My best advice would be just don’t give up, and carefully choose your tags.
Is there anything else you’d like our readers to know about you?
I love cats, cooking, and chocolate!
