Getting Started on Instagram

Instagram is a mobile photo sharing social network which lets you take a photo and share it with all of your friends and followers.  From product shots to pet pics – Instagram has it all! In this blog post, we’ll go over how to create an Instagram account and share tips on how to grow your followers.

1 – Create an Instagram account

To create your Instagram account, go to the app store on your device, click on the search bar, and type in “Instagram.” Scroll until you find the app, select it, and click “Install.”

Create an account by clicking the “sign up” button at the bottom of the home screen and enter your email, username, password, phone number (optional), and upload a photo (also optional) to create your account. You may also customize your personal information in the about section as well, including a personal website. This is great place to add a link to your Zazzle store. Don’t forget to include your Associate ID so you can earn referrals.

Follow friends: You can choose to import contacts and find friends from your contact list, Facebook account, Twitter, or simply search for names and usernames. Following people allows you to see their post in your newsfeed. You will be able to add friends and other designers to your account even after you have created your account.

2 – Review the Instagram feed tabs

Scroll through your feed. Tap the house icon on the bottom left of the tool bar. From within this tab you will be able to see all of the most recent post by the users you are following.

Discovery tab. This tab (magnifying glass) allows you to search for users and hashtags, go to the discovery tab and type into the search bar at the top.

View your news and updates. Anytime someone likes one of your photos, comments on one of your photos, follows you, or tags you in a photo, you will be notified in this tab. This icon with the heart will be located on the third tab over.

3 – Take a photo

Take a new photo for Instagram. If you don’t have a photo you want to post from your photo album, you can take a new photo and upload it directly to Instagram by using the camera icon in the center to snap a photo. Click “next” to move onto the next screen.

Upload a photo from your photo albums. Already have a photo in your album you would love to use? You can add this image by clicking the gallery tab while in the camera option. Scroll through your library until you find the photo you would like to add, and then tap it to select it. Click “next” to move onto the next screen. You can also upload a video if you prefer.

4 – Edit and apply a filter to your photo

Instagram provides multiple filters at your disposal to edit your photos. Click on the squares at the bottom to select from the choices that appear. You can only select a single filter, and to test these options simply tap each filter icon and you will see a preview of your altered image. If you feel you don’t like any of the filters the far left tile will always revert your image back to its original form. Click “next” when you are finished.

5 – Caption, tag & share your photo

Add information to your image. Enter a brief description of your photo in the box titled “Write a caption.” Here you will be able to add a description and hashtags to provide a searchable query. Using the @ symbol and/or a hashtag are both great ways to communicate to and include brands in your captions.

Tag your photo! If you upload a photo of you and your friends – tag your friends. If you upload a photo of a product – tag the brand! In situ photos are particularly popular with brands. Take a look at the Zazzle Inspiration Gallery for ideas.

Share your photo outside of Instagram. Simply click on an icon to share your photo on any additional social networks.

Whether you are scrolling through your news feed or viewing images in the popular tab, you can show your interest by liking or commenting on them. To like a photo, you can either press the heart shaped button just under the photo, or simply double tap the image. To comment on a photo, click the small comment bubble icon and type your comment when the keyboard appears.

7 – Review your profile

To see a history of your uploaded photos as well as a complete list of who you’re following and who your followers are, you can visit your profile tab on the far right tab. Take note of what type of posts get the most likes and comments. Get to know your followers by liking, commenting and sharing with them directly. Most of all – have fun with it!

  1. Great info. I just switched my website on Instagram from my personal website to my zazzle store as my zazzle store is getting more traffic anyway. I think you should write a blog about the benefits of using ifft. You can setup recipes to post to multiple social media sites. For examole, every time I post to Instagram and use a certain tag, that post also automatically goes to my twitter, personal Facebook accout, my Facebook business page, google plus, tumblr, and saved as a draft to my WordPress.

  2. I just wish Zazzle tooke the boldd step of linking up with services such as have2have, where our instagram profile becomes our e-commerce website itself!

Have you guys heard of it before?

    1. Hi Nilson,

      Thank you for your comment.

We partner with rewardStyle which offers a similar tool called LIKEtoKNOW.it.

I will reach out to you via email in case you have any questions.

      Best,
      Elizabeth P.

  3. Is it possible to have a an Instagram button on Zazzle like they currently have Twitter, Google+, Pinterest and Tumbler beside each product? This makes it easier when signed in our Zazzle account with promoting products.

    1. Hi JennLenay,

Great question! There isn’t a way to share to Instagram from a desktop computer at this time. However, if you go to our app or our website on your phone, you should be able to share a product via a direct message to someone on Instagram, as long as you have the Instagram app installed.

      Hope this helps!
      Best,
      Elizabeth P.
