Meet River Jude’s Amanda Witt who finds a lot of inspiration in leather and lace.
Tell us about yourself! Where is your hometown? Where do you live now? Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of design? Any fun facts about yourself?
I grew up in small-town Texas, and have since lived in places as various as England, Seattle, and Michigan. Fun facts: I have a Ph.D. in Victorian literature, and I’ve published four YA novels.
Tell us about the space where you do your work. Do you have an official studio or have your carved out a nook in your home? Both are equally wonderful and we’re excited to learn more!
I work right in the middle of chaos, generally, sharing space with three nearly grown kids, three cats, a dog, and a husband.
What is your background in art/design? What got you started creating?
I took some design classes back in college, and got into photography for a while, but I started designing for Zazzle at the urging of one of Zazzle’s platinum sellers. She was a homeschool mother–and so was I–and she kept telling me what a great way it was to generate some income while staying home. She was right!
Where do you find inspiration for your designs?
I love vintage/Victoriana, and I love Texas, so my designs tend to combine the rustic with the elegant. I use a lot of leather but soften it with vintage lace. Or I might have a fisherman theme, but use a vintage silhouette of lovers in a boat to raise the classiness quotient. I was pleased when one customer emailed to say she loved my designs and could always recognize them in the marketplace at a glance, because of the usual style.
When do you feel your most creative? Your least?
I’m an early bird. Anything good, creatively speaking, is going to happen close to dawn.
What are your favorite products to design on Zazzle?
Invitations and matching party products. I’ve had so many customers contact me to tweak a design for their weddings, graduations, quineaneras, etc.–I love contributing in this way to someone’s special celebration.
If you could wish for one new product on Zazzle, what would it be and why?
Zazzle is keeping me busy with new products already!
What was the very first Zazzle product that you sold?
A vintage-style baby shower invitation.
What are your favorite product types to design on Zazzle?
What Are Your 5 Favorite Products in Your Store?
Do you have any advice for new Zazzle Designers?
Find a very specific niche that doesn’t have too many competing products, and put time and care into each one.
Is there anything else you’d like our readers to know about you?
I really enjoy designing, especially when someone has been searching for the perfect product and then emails to thank me for designing it.
