I paint self-portraits because I am so often alone, because I am the person I know best. – Frida Kahlo
Michael Jackson wrote a song called “The Man in the Mirror,” where he sang “I’m searching for the man in the mirror/I’m asking him to make a change.” Mahatma Gandhi said that “if we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change.” Both of these quotes ask us to look inside ourselves, to find our weaknesses and make them strengths. The artist Frida Kahlo looked deep inside herself, using self-portraits to show the world who she saw in the mirror. Her art remains as powerful, and as honest, as it was when she painted each piece.
July 6th, 2017 would have been the 110th birthday of Frida Kahlo. To celebrate, Zazzle created a Frida Kahlo store full of images and designs inspired by Kahlo’s art. You may not be familiar with Kahlo and her work, so let’s have a little Cliff’s Notes lesson on her history, and her art!
Who is Frida Kahlo?
Frida Kahlo was born in Coyoacán, Mexico, in 1907. A bus accident as a teenager resulted in a dislocated shoulder, broken foot, fractures in her spine, collarbone, and ribs, and a shattered pelvis. Kahlo spent a lot of time in a body cast, recovering from her injuries. It was during this time she took up painting.
What did Frida Kahlo paint?
Kahlo used her pain as a recurring theme in her art, as well as her turbulent marriage to Diego Rivera, a famous artist in his own right. In over 200 paintings, sketches, and drawings, Kahlo expressed the torture of her injuries, as well as the pain of dealing with a cheating husband. Fifty-five of her paintings are self-portraits, the most famous being The Broken Column (WARNING: the image is a bit graphic, and depicts nudity).
Like many artists, Kahlo didn’t sell many of her works during her lifetime. Now her art sells for millions, with a self-portrait, Roots, fetching $5.6 million dollars at a Sotheby’s auction in 2006.
Zazzle is proud to feature images and designs celebrating this talented artist. Head on over to the Frida Kahlo store to find more fantastic designs and amazing products!
