Meet Pei Li Lee — a Zazzle Designer and Associate who is a full-time blogger and owner of the Zazzle store Vivid Ideas and website Vivid’s Gift Ideas. Residing currently in Malaysia with her husband and cat Chester, Pei Li Lee spends her time creating gift guides and expanding her business through networking and social media.
Tell us a little about you!
I am a full-time blogger who does part-time graphic design work. Through my blog Vivid’s Gift Ideas (vividgiftideas.com), I help people find the perfect gifts for different occasions.
I love cats, good tea, and every pretty thing in life. I was living in Kalamazoo, Michigan, before moving back and settled down in Penang, Malaysia. I now live happily with my husband and my cat, Chester.
What is your background in?
My graphic design skill is completely self-taught (thanks, Internet!). By education, my background is actually in economics. I spent years working in the corporate world before venturing into full-time blogging in 2013. Despite the many benefits of working for a corporation, I find the work somewhat unfulfilling. So I decided to leave to pursue my passion and a lifestyle that provides more freedom.
The week after I left my job, I started vividgiftideas.com (http://vividgiftideas.com) with my now-husband to share gift ideas. Later on, I also started doing some graphic design.
How did you get started with Zazzle? How did you hear about us?
So I was making gift recommendations through my blog, but sometimes I just couldn’t seem to find the right gifts to recommend. That situation inspired me to create something unique to fill in the gap. Given several constraints I had at that time, I knew that POD (Print on Demand) was the way to go.
My husband and I did some research on POD services and Zazzle came up as a clear winner among several other contestants. With Zazzle, I was able to really focus on the products themselves and let Zazzle take care of distractive tasks such as manufacturing, logistics, and customer service. On top of that, Zazzle also has an attractive Associates Program with which I can earn referral fees by recommending my own products. That’s like double the goodness and I have been working with Zazzle ever since.
How do you promote Zazzle products and what tools do you use? How do you choose what products to promote? Which areas do you find the most success in?
Mainly, I promote Zazzle products with my own blog with the good ol’ text links and a couple of product images. My readers seem to really like simple and whimsical designs, so that’s always the criterion that I look for in a product to promote. It is also important that the product fits the context of the gift guide that I’m working on at the time.
What new Associate Program features would you like to see on Zazzle?
I think it’d be really cool if there’s a tool on Zazzle that we can use to create collages of products (similar to Polyvore).
What advice would you give to a new Associate starting to promote Zazzle products?
If you do not have a blog, start one today. Share your thoughts and products on your blog, let the world know the existence of your new creation. Engage your audience regularly in order to build a stronger relationship. Networking is important. One blogger friend I made during the early days of blogging, Lisa from Labitt.com (https://labitt.com), has been tremendously generous in helping me to promote my products.
Be active on your preferred social media websites, for example, Pinterest, Instagram, and Facebook. Post consistently to let your followers know what is up with you and to attract new followers who are interested in your work. Through years of effort, I have managed to accumulate more than 10,000 followers on Pinterest (see https://www.pinterest.com/vividgiftideas/) and they are really great at providing inspirations and helping you to promote your products.
