According to my mom, Mother’s Day goes on 365 days a year in our house. And while I try to treat my mom like a queen every day, I try to make Mother’s Day a little more meaningful with a handmade gift and breakfast in bed. If your mom is anything like my mom, she would much rather receive a gift made with your own two hands than buying something off the shelf. Here are five fun, unique Mother’s Day gifts I’ve made for my mom over the years.
- Your Own DIY Craft Project
Unfortunately, I got my lack of creativity from my dad. Luckily, I have the most supportive mom in the world and there hasn’t been one art project she didn’t hang on the fridge. My best masterpieces have always been with paint and my hands. I take pink paint, which is my mom’s favorite color, paint the inside of my hands, and do a little handstand on some white paper. After the handprints dry, I take a black pen and I write ten things I love about my mom in each of the painted fingers. This is a simple and cute way to show Mom your appreciation in the form of beautiful art she can hang up on the fridge.
- A Shared Playlist of Favorite Tunes
My mom and I bond over music more than I would expect. She will play all the classic throwbacks from her glory days like Prince and Madonna. In return, I try to keep her up to date with the latest hits by jamming out to Kendrick Lamar and Dua Lipa. Our car rides together are always miniature concerts, hosted and performed by us. I contribute to our love of music by making her the ultimate mixtape. In the past, I’ve compiled the best songs onto USB flash drives or CDs. Recently, I found it easier to make a Spotify playlist and share the link in a beautiful card I designed myself!
I try to remember that it’s the thought that matters rather than the physical gift. I always get the same positive, surprised reaction from my mom when I spontaneously play our songs during our car rides!
- Everlasting Pictures & Videos
If you’re creative in photography and videography, this is a great opportunity to put together a scrapbook or slideshow featuring the two of you. My mom hates it when I take videos of her, so I like to take those videos and create a funny montage of all the times she yells at me for taking videos of her. I get a laugh or two from her before she screams “Delete it! You better not post that on social media!” Moms love pictures of their kids. It was super simple to put a picture of me and my brother onto a canvas and wrap it up to give to her. Sometimes my mom reminiscences on the days when my brother and I were little kids, so I made her a phone case with her favorite childhood picture of us. A picture is worth a thousand words. Make a video or take a picture and watch your mom’s face light up with joy!
- Mother-Daughter Inside Jokes
Sharing an inside joke with your mom is the best piece of information you have to make the ultimate unique gift. My mom and I share a deep love for Mexican food. There are only a handful of things that make my mom happier than eating a bean and cheese burrito with no onions and extra cheese. Instead of getting my mom a dozen beautiful red roses, I think outside the box and surprise her with a dozen beautiful bean and cheese burritos! She’s the most caring woman I know when she shares 1 or 2 of the burritos with me. I’ll take what I can get!
- Your Precious Time
The best gift I have ever given my mom was my time. She absolutely hates it when I spend money on her. My time and attention are much more valuable in her eyes. Having a mother that doubles as your best friend is the coolest feeling in the world. If spending the day together would be her ideal Mother’s Day present, then it’s a win-win situation for me! Hikes, watching movies, and playing tennis are just some of my mom’s favorite activities. She also really enjoys concerts, putting together puzzles, and beating me in bowling. Gifting my time has been priceless and it has meant the absolute most to my mom. It’s an annual gift I will gladly give to her every Mother’s Day.
There shouldn’t be a day that goes by where you don’t tell your mom how much you love and appreciate her. Take this Mother’s Day to shower her with hugs, kisses, and unique gifts made from your heart.
