Meet Erica Husband of Decorated Daydreams! You’ll see how Erica’s love of patterns and the outdoors influences her delightful designs.
Tell us about yourself!
Hi! My name is Erica and I’m a stay-at-home mom to my three beautiful boys who have all been diagnosed with autism. I met my husband in 1997. We have been married for 19 years and together we run our own businesses to be able to have the flexibility for our boys when needed. We love being crafty and outdoorsy every chance we get when weather permits. I am originally from New York and spent many summers on my grandparent’s campground in upstate NY. We currently live in Phoenix, Arizona and have moved quite a few times over the last 20 years between New York, Arizona and New Mexico. We are also a Disney loving family and go to Disneyland any chance we get.
Tell us about the space where you do your work. Do you have an official studio or have you carved out a nook in your home?
I don’t have a formal studio that I work from. I have a desk in my room near a window that brings in a lot of light, and sometimes I move my work area to my couch since I use my laptop to create my designs. I love being able to be mobile. I can design from anywhere, even while traveling.
What is your background in art/design? What got you started creating?
I grew up in Staten Island, New York and as a child I loved to create greeting cards on my grandfather’s computer with Photoshop and to draw pictures and color. While in high school, I became interested in interior design and fell in love with decorating.
In 2012, I was introduced to the Zazzle world and discovered I can be creative with my own patterns and graphics on many different products. I’d already opened a handmade store on another platform, making bracelets, but it didn’t really give me the creativity I craved. Being able to stay at home and take care of my boys, and not have to worry about daycare, was a big motivator for me.
Where do you find inspiration for your designs?
My inspiration comes when I’m out and about shopping at home stores, taking photographs of nature or surfing the internet for the latest in trends and colors. I make a point to create some of my designs around Pantone’s color of the year. I am obsessed with patterns, so my favorite things to design on are pillows, mugs, electronics cases, and blankets; anything I can put a pattern or monogram on.
When do you feel most creative? Your least?
I like to design early in the morning with a HUGE cup of coffee, after sending my boys off to school or late at night after everyone is in bed. That is when it’s the quietest and I can concentrate without having to be on mom duty.
What are your favorite products to design on Zazzle?
I love home decor, wedding and baby products! So making patterns on pillows and monogram on mugs or totes are a few favorites. I also pushed myself out of my comfort zone and found a new love for invitations and party supplies.
If you could wish for one new product on Zazzle, what would it be and why?
I would love to see leather jewelry, maybe earrings and bracelets that you could personalize or put patterns on.
What was the very first Zazzle product that you sold?
The very first thing I sold on Zazzle was a watch with a lotus blossom on it.
What are your favorite product types to design on Zazzle?
My favorite product types to design on are pillows, mugs, invitations and party and craft supplies.
What Are Your 5 Favorite Products in Your Store?
What else would you like people to know about you?
What I’d like people to know is that I’m a mom and wife first. I do whatever I can for my family, and if I can do what I love, and still be there for them, it never feels like work.
Do you have any advice for new Zazzle Designers?
Be consistent in your designing and do the research as to what products to design on. That is key in making your designs profitable. Also, do what you love. It will show in your designs.
